34:41They will say, ‘Immaculate are You! You are our wali, not they! No, they used to worship the jinn; most of them had faith in them.’1
34:42‘Today you have no power to benefit or harm one another,’ and We shall say to those who did wrong, ‘Taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny.’
34:43When Our manifest signs are recited to them, they say, ‘This is just a man who desires to keep you from what your fathers used to worship.’ And they say, ‘This is nothing but a fabricated lie.’ The faithless say of the truth when it comes to them: ‘This is nothing but plain magic,’
34:44though We did not give them any scriptures that they might have studied, nor did We send them any warner before you.2
34:45Those who were before them had also denied—and these have not attained one-tenth of what We had given them—they impugned My apostles, so how was My rebuttal!
34:46Say, ‘I give you just a single advice: that you rise up for Allah’s sake, in pairs or singly, and then reflect: there is no madness in your companion; he is just a warner to you before [the befalling of] a severe punishment.’*
34:47Say, ‘Whatever reward I may have asked you is for your own good. My [true] reward lies only with Allah, and He is witness to all things.’
34:48Say, ‘Indeed my Lord hurls the truth. [He is] the knower of all that is Unseen.’

Commentary on this passage
Verse 46
1.The Holy Prophet of Islam (s.a.w.s.) has condensed in one sentence all his teachings: that we should know that he was mentally sound because one who has a defect in mind his words are not reliable.
One one and two two means we can deliberate on that problem in two ways, whether sitting alone examine my instruction and commands, my behavior and my character or argue and discuss about me with your companions and see that there is no effect of insanity in my statement and when it is clarified, bring faith on me.
This same was told by the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) on the first day. When he raised the slogan of Asba standing on Mt. Safa, the people gathered there. He said: If I inform you that somebody is going to attack from behind this mountain, would you believe me? People said: Yes we shall believe you. He said: Then I am warning you of the chastisement of the Hereafter. Now, the demand of my truthfulness is that you bring faith on me. This shows that those who did not trust the Prophet’s sanity are not Muslims.

Benefit
Two points are mentioned in the 39th ayat: (1) Allah is the best of the sustainers. He provides only after seeing the hidden wisdom. He is capable of providing everything. He does not ask for recompense. Most of the time He bestows without asking. And the best thing it is everlasting, and He gives in large quantities instead of in small quantities. (2) He reimburses all that is spent. Provided it is spent in His way and accompanied with a firm belief in His promise. It is a divine guarantee and it is madness not to take the benefit of it.
- 1
It probably means that these people worship the Jinns or that these people worship the angels not because they had told them to. This was also due to the instigation of Jinns. Just like even today a great many people worship false deities. due to the misguidance of others.
- 2
They have no proof for their disbelief and polytheism. Neither have they received any scripture or Prophet. What they believe is baseless and false.
Benefit
It is a surprising allegation in the 46th ayat! That Quran which has criticized people who do not ponder 46 times. It emphasises contemplation hundreds of times. Islam considers a minute of contemplation equal to an hour’s worship. Such a faith is alleged to be dogmatic!
