Makkan60 verses

30:33When distress befalls people, they supplicate their Lord, turning to Him in penitence. Then, when He lets them taste His mercy, behold, a part of them ascribe partners to their Lord,

30:34being ungrateful toward what We have given them. So let them enjoy. Soon they will know!

30:35Have We sent down to them any authority which might assert what they associate with Him?

30:36When We let people taste [Our] mercy, they boast about it; but should an ill visit them because of what their hands have sent ahead, behold, they become despondent!

30:37Do they not see that Allah expands the provision for whomever He wishes, and tightens it? There are indeed signs in that for a people who have faith.

30:38Give the relative his due, and the needy and the traveller [as well]. That is better for those who seek Allah’s pleasure, and it is they who are the felicitous.*

30:39What you give in usury in order that it may increase people’s wealth does not increase with Allah. But what you pay as zakat seeking Allah’s pleasure—it is they who will be given a manifold increase.*

30:40It is Allah who created you and then He provided for you, then He makes you die, then He will bring you to life. Is there anyone among your ‘partners’ who does anything of that kind? Immaculate is He and exalted above [having] any partners that they ascribe [to Him]!

30:41Corruption has appeared in land and sea because of the doings of the people’s hands, that He may make them taste something of what they have done, so that they may come back.*

Tafsir

Commentary on this passage

1.Usury is the greatest problem of the world. It is a thing in which a man can be trapped. Usury is a deception by which the communities become lazy. It is a weapon that makes the appropriateness of community ineffectual. Usury is a way by which the communities exploit. It is a clear argument about usury that it increases property. Though an unblessed increment is not called a real increment and whatever is given in charity becomes the source of increment where money is spent outwardly but it brings good fortune.

To recognize the blessedness is not in control of any man. Shaitan does not give chance to be attentive towards it that religious tax and charity increases the wealt.h. A man collects lakhs of rupees lawfully or unlawfully or by miserliness and then he is involved in disease. Then he praises his course of action and his miserliness and says if we had not collected these, what would have happened today?

And he forgets if he had not collected money in this way, may be he would not had been involved in any disease. But man does not take a lesson. He has become a man of world entirely and absorbed in self-satisfaction.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

It should be clear regarding the 38th ayat that though this is a Meccan surah this general law can be applied in Medina in connection with Fadak. There is no contradiction in it.

  2. *

Also, in the 39th ayat the word Riban refers to the gifts that are squandered upon the officials to extract great wealth from them. Besides this there is no motive in them.

  3. 1

The relatives whose maintenance is obligatory on us. There is difference of opinion among various schools of thought. Some people consider only the parents and children in this. Some include all the male ancestors and all the descendants. Others are of the opinion that all those eligible for inheritance are to be included. However, the circumstances of revelation (Shaan-e-Nuzul) indicate as mentioned in historical records that after the conquest of Khyber when Fadak came in the hands of the Prophet (s.a.) without use of weapons, it became his personal property. Then the divine command descended that he must give the rights of his near kindred. After which the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) gifted the income from Fadak to Fatima Zahra (s.a.). This document was shown to Abu Bakr and before inheritance it was claimed as a gift. But due to political exigencies, this demand was rejected. This political intrigue still continues and even today when Muslims want to raise their voice for truth, they find in themselves an internal weakness.

  4. Benefit

The Corruption on the land and sea in 41st ayat, as a general meaning and the aim, is to express that this corruption is the handiwork of man. If he ponders he will realize that every sinful deed has the seed to perpetrate corruption.
