3:54Then they plotted [against Jesus], and Allah also devised, and Allah is the best of devisers.1
3:55When Allah said, ‘O Jesus, I shall take you[r soul], and I shall raise you up toward Myself, and I shall clear you of [the calumnies of] the faithless, and I shall set those who follow you above the faithless until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me will be your return, whereat I will judge between you concerning that about which you used to differ.23
3:56As for the faithless, I will punish them with a severe punishment in the world and the Hereafter; and they will have no helpers.’
3:57But as for those who have faith and do righteous deeds, He will pay them in full their rewards, and Allah does not like the wrongdoers.
3:58These that We recite to you are from the signs and the Wise Reminder.
3:59Indeed the case of Jesus with Allah is like the case of Adam: He created him from dust, then said to him, ‘Be,’ and he was.4
3:60This is the truth from your Lord, so do not be among the skeptics.5
3:61Should anyone argue with you concerning him, after the knowledge that has come to you, say, ‘Come! Let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, our souls and your souls, then let us pray earnestly, and call down Allah’s curse upon the liars.’
3:62This is indeed the true account, for sure. There is no god but Allah, and indeed Allah is the All-mighty, the All-wise.

Commentary on this passage
Verse 54
1.A person named Yahuda conspired against Isa (a.s.) so that he could be arrested and hanged. When he entered the house Allah raised Isa (a.s.) to the heavens and made Vahuda a look-alike of Isa (a.s.) and people caught him. He cried out that he was not Isa (a.s.) but he was nailed to the cross. After his death he was reverted to his original appearance and in this way Divine revenge became obvious. The Christians should also take a lesson from this incident that divine revenge is very severe and Allah turns the plot of every tyrant towards him and Muslims should also be satisfied that Allah adopts ways for helping truth that people of falsehood cannot even imagine.
Verse 61
2.In 9th Hijri when different delegations were coming to the Prophet (s.a.) a delegation of sixty people from Najran led by Abdul Masih Mashirabih Alam Abu Haritha also met him. His aim was to argue about Isa’s (a.s.) divinity and sonship. Their only argument was that Isa (a.s.) was born without a father. The Prophet (s.a.) replied by the permission of Allah and gave them example of Adam (a.s.). Karuz, the brother of Abu Haritha agreed and said: Whatever the Prophet has said is right. Abu Haritha scolded his brother and said: If we accept this what we shall eat and what will happen to our indulgence we are getting in our community? Seeing their obstinacy the Prophet (s.a.) invited them to Mubahela - that is to pray that the curse of Allah may overtake the party that insisted upon falsehood. Giving such a challenge was not possible without truthfulness of ones claim. The next day morning when the Prophet (s.a.) came out with Ali, Fatimah (a.s.) and both sons Hasan and Husain (a.s.) the Christians declared that they do not intend to participate in the Mubahela. If they (Ahle Bayt) curse, the mountains will move from their place. What to say of the Christians, Sahih Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi, Tafseer Tabari, Tafseer Razi etc. have quoted this incident verbatim, and Fakhr Razi has also mentioned the recitation of Ayat-e-Tathir on this occasion. That the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) gathered Able Bayt (a.s.) and recited this ayat. And has also proved from the ayat of Mubahela that Hasan and Husain (a.s.) are the sons of the Prophet (s.a.).

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses
- 1
Makr if used opposite makr it would denote a response. That is when the infidels make evil plots and Allah responds to it. Like Allah is called Shakir, Tawwab. Momin or Mutakabbir etc. That all these denote the recompense of deeds and response.
- 2
Mutawaffi - One who fulfills. For this death is not necessary. The period should be completed in any way. If it is the stay on the earth, it is called Mutawaffa. It should be clear that one who promises is called Mutawaffa and not Mutawaffi. Mutawaffi is God.
- 3
Fauqiyat - denotes superiority due to personal perfections and not due to kingdom and power.
- 4
Here one should not think that what is the use of saying Kun Fayakoon after creation. Because Kun Fayakoon was after the stage of clay and not after the completion of the whole creation.
- 5
This address to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) was due to the significance of the matter otherwise such an address would be useless after Infallibility. Though from the aspect of personality some commentators have considered it permissible.
