3:53Our Lord, we believe in what You have sent down, and we follow the apostle, so write us among the witnesses.’

Commentary on this passage

Verse 46

1.There is a list of Isa’s (a.s.) miracles, he will talk in the cradle and also for after the prime of life and till he will live. Ibne Abbas has stated that Isa (a.s.) talked for a moment in his infancy, gave witness for his mother’s purity and thence he did not speak.

Verse 49

2.Isa’s (a.s.) Prophethood is quite different from the Prophethood of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.). As our Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) is the Prophet of entire universe and has been sent among the trustworthy people. And Isa (a.s.) was the Prophet for Bani Israel alone and has given reference of Allah’s permission in his miracles so that no one can consider him as Allah. There are four types of his miracles. (i) He created a bird from soil. (ii) He cured the blind and the leper. (iii) He returned the dead to life. (iv) And gave information of invisible. All these were by the command of Allah and supported by Him, so that we understand that the human being can do his work with the support of god, and is incapable solely by his own personal strength.

Verse 51

3.After showing many wonders he said: do not call me Allah. My Lord and your Lord is one and it is our duty to worship Him.

Verse 52

4.At the beginning, the Christians believed in Isa (a.s.) and obeyed him. They were verifiers to Taurat and obeyed the rules and commands but gradually reflected on Isa’s (a.s) personality, they thought their prestige would be in danger in future. They inclined to oppose him and started harassing him in every possible manner. This happens perennially with Apostles in every era. They support their religion and children as long as they safeguards and law of their status are in peril and whenever their interests or safeguards are out of danger, they restart their continuing opposition. Allah created a few companions for Isa (a.s.) because Prophethood would be helpless without their assistance. The companions said we are helpers, we believer in Allah and bear witness. As helpers of an Apostle are in reality, helpers of ALLAH.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Mahad - Cradle, Lahed - The last stage of youth.

  2. 2

Masse Bashar - It is a metaphor of an action which results in pregnancy.

  3. 3

Kitab could also denote the original writing and also the Book of Allah after which the mention of Taurat and Injeel would be only to clarify and show the significance.

  4. 4

It shows that Isa (a.s.) was not the Prophet for whole humanity. He was appointed and sent only for Bani Israel.

  5. 5

It is the plural of Hawari. It was the title of the devotees of the Isa (a.s.) who numbered twelve. Some say that Hawari is a washer man and it was their profession and others say that they had received this title due to the purity of their deeds and character. Hawara is absolute cleanness and whiteness.

  6. Benefit

We should know that the beginning of youth is Shabaab, middle age is Kahel, that is from 34 to 51 years. After this is the stage of Shaykh. Isa (a.s.) went to the heavens at the age of 33 years so the word Kahetan is a sign of his return. Also regarding Yahya (a.s.), Yafal Maa Yashaa is used while for Isa (a.s.) it is Yakhluq Maa Yashaa. Thus it indicates towards the difference in their creation. Akhluq - It indicates towards original guardianship of the holy saints and Be Iznillaah (by the permission of Allah) is not concerning polytheism.
