3:174So they returned with Allah’s blessing and grace, untouched by any harm. They pursued the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is dispenser of a great grace.1

3:175That is only Satan frightening [you] of his followers! So fear them not, and fear Me, should you be faithful.2

3:176Do not grieve for those who are active in unfaith; they will not hurt Allah in the least: Allah desires to give them no share in the Hereafter, and there is a great punishment for them.

3:177Those who have bought unfaith for faith will not hurt Allah in the least, and there is a painful punishment for them.

3:178Let the faithless not suppose that the respite that We grant them is good for their souls: We give them respite only that they may increase in sin, and there is a humiliating punishment for them.3

3:179Allah will not leave the faithful in your present state, until He has separated the bad ones from the good. Allah will not acquaint you with the Unseen, but Allah chooses whomever He wishes from His apostles. So have faith in Allah and His apostles; and if you are faithful and Godwary, there shall be a great reward for you.

3:180Let the stingy not suppose that [their grudging] what Allah has given them out of His bounty is good for them; no, it is bad for them. They will be collared with what they grudge on the Day of Resurrection. To Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is well aware of what you do.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 174

1.We gain lesson from some points from this auspicious verse of the Holy Quran, so the Muslims must be attentive towards it.

(i) Allah is helpful to those who fight in the way of Allah. They go forth from their homes, though they are wounded. Then Allah creates fear in the mind of the enemies of Allah and cause them to flee from the battlefield this happens during the heat of battle. And as for those who remain in the security of their houses, Allah’s help is not forthcoming to them.

(ii) The traits of the satanic is to gauge the strength of the enemy and the weaknesses of the muslim. Those who come under their influence will have Shaitan as their master. People who believe in Al1ah, never come under their control. The battle of Khandaq is an example of this.

(iii) A person should not be perplexed by the endeavour of the enemy. They act in inappropriate manner in all situations. The Faithful never have fear as Allah is their Helper and He is all to sink the ships of all their enemies.

(iv) The material comforts and pleasures, they signify naught. Allah assigns them full authority for action according to him. For what Allah wants to annihilate, He can destroy in a few moments.

(v) Allah knows the good and the wicked, but keeps the people unaware for such knowledge would make worldly life impossible and detestation and revulsion universal.

(vi) Allah informs His believers about the hidden knowledge and advices them to use this knowledge at particular time. (vii) Miserliness is not an art. It is flaw and imperfection and its end is very severe and painful.

Allah does not bestow wealth to use it in sinful activities. After becoming rich the infidels fall into sin and Allah gives them a free hand. It is on the basis of this that the word respite is used in the Quran. It has numerous equivalents in the Quran.

  4. Benefit

The Laam in the 178th verse is Laam of Aaqebat and Laam of Ghait. So that no one can say that force has been used. The word ‘Fazla’ in 180th verse indicates that everything has been given by Allah and the inheritance of the heavens and the earth is for Him alone. And when everything will ultimately go to Him, it is better to give it with our own hands. Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s.) says that one who does not remove Zakat of his property will be made to wear it as a collar. That since he did not want to have it separated from him he should keep it to himself.”
