3:154Then He sent down to you safety after grief—a drowsiness that came over a group of you—while another group, anxious only about themselves, entertained false notions about Allah, notions of [pagan] ignorance. They say, ‘Do we have any role in the matter?’ Say, ‘Indeed the matter belongs totally to Allah.’ They hide in their hearts what they do not disclose to you. They say, ‘Had we any role in the matter, we would not have been slain here.’ Say, ‘Even if you had remained in your houses, those destined to be slain would have set out toward the places where they were laid to rest, so that Allah may test what is in your breasts, and that He may purge what is in your hearts, and Allah knows well what is in the breasts.’123

3:155Those of you who fled on the day when the two hosts met, only Satan had made them stumble because of some of their deeds. Certainly, Allah has excused them, for Allah is all-forgiving, all-forbearing.

3:156O you who have faith! Do not be like the faithless who say of their brethren, when they travel in the land or go into battle, ‘Had they stayed with us they would not have died or been killed,’ so that Allah may make it a regret in their hearts. But Allah gives life and brings death, and Allah watches what you do.4

3:157If you are slain in the way of Allah, or die, forgiveness and mercy from Allah are surely better than what they amass.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 154

1.How Allah, the Master of the Universe helps His believers. A scene of the tired warriors of the battle of Uhud is one of them, which removed their fatigue of war and pointed out their satisfaction in receipt of this pleasure. The scene of the faith and coincidence is contemplate i.e. the night of migration, sleep of Ali (a.s.) and the night of Khyber, vigilance and restlessness of some followers have been catagorized. Here the sign of hypocrite points out towards some particular manners

(i) They worry about their life more than faith and religion.

(ii) They want to involve themselves in matters of the Divine and try to present their opinion at every opportunity.

(iii) Instead of understanding the dignity of martyrdom in the way of Allah, they taunt.

(iv) Their feet are always ready to flee from the battlefield. There is no steadfastness.

(v) They have always been deluded by Shaitan and never listen to Prophet (s.a.w.s.).

(vi) There is nothing in their portion except wistfulness and despair.

(vii) They hold dear, the booty and worldly pleasure rather than Allah’s mercy and forgiveness. Be it known that the verse of the Holy Quran announced for pardon, this concerns the virtuous people who ran away due to their weakness of mind and cowardice and were not unbelievers in actuality. There is no question of forgiveness to hypocrites. Now, who are hypocrites? Their identification can be seen from the above mentioned seven signs.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

The first group is of the Mukhleseen (sincere ones) who are given serenity by sleep, and the other group is of the hypocrites who could not sleep due to fear and greed.

  2. 2

The hypocrites wanted to share in the affairs of the war, and that the Muslims should have followed their advice. According to them if Muslims had listened to them they would not have left the town and had not been slain in an alien land.

  3. 3

Some people have taken it to mean sins, that sins show their effects in every place. Some have taken it to mean weakness cowardice, that were exploited by Shaitan.

  4. 4

It should be clear that this was not told by the infidels to those who were slain in the battle. They told it to the survivors. Thus the laam is for Ta’leel (cause). Just as the Laam of Lamyajal indicates plurality. And the Laam of lain is the Laam of Oath. And the Laam of Leamaghfirato is the Laam of the reply of oath and in the same way are the Laam of La-in and the La of Allah.

  5. Benefit

Tabarsi quotes Abul Qasim Balkhi that only eight Ansars and five Muhajireen did not flee from the battlefield. There is absolute agreement as regards the presence of Ali (a.s.), and there is difference of opinion concerning others.
