Verses 148–153

3. Aal-i-Imraan · The Family of Imraan

فَـَٔاتَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ثَوَابَ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَحُسْنَ ثَوَابِ ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

3:148So Allah gave them the reward of this world and the fair reward of the Hereafter; and Allah loves the virtuous.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِن تُطِيعُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يَرُدُّوكُمْ عَلَىٰٓ أَعْقَٰبِكُمْ فَتَنقَلِبُوا۟ خَٰسِرِينَ

3:149O you who have faith! If you obey the faithless, they will turn you back on your heels, and you will become losers.

بَلِ ٱللَّهُ مَوْلَىٰكُمْ ۖ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ ٱلنَّٰصِرِينَ

3:150Indeed, Allah is your Master, and He is the best of helpers.

سَنُلْقِى فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ٱلرُّعْبَ بِمَآ أَشْرَكُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ مَا لَمْ يُنَزِّلْ بِهِۦ سُلْطَٰنًۭا ۖ وَمَأْوَىٰهُمُ ٱلنَّارُ ۚ وَبِئْسَ مَثْوَى ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

3:151We shall cast terror into the hearts of the faithless because of their ascribing partners to Allah, for which He has not sent down any authority, and their refuge shall be the Fire, and evil is the [final] abode of the wrongdoers.1

وَلَقَدْ صَدَقَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَعْدَهُۥٓ إِذْ تَحُسُّونَهُم بِإِذْنِهِۦ ۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا فَشِلْتُمْ وَتَنَٰزَعْتُمْ فِى ٱلْأَمْرِ وَعَصَيْتُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ مَآ أَرَىٰكُم مَّا تُحِبُّونَ ۚ مِنكُم مَّن يُرِيدُ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَمِنكُم مَّن يُرِيدُ ٱلْءَاخِرَةَ ۚ ثُمَّ صَرَفَكُمْ عَنْهُمْ لِيَبْتَلِيَكُمْ ۖ وَلَقَدْ عَفَا عَنكُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ ذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

3:152Allah certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were slaying them with His leave, until you lost courage, disputed about the matter, and disobeyed after He showed you what you loved. Some among you desire this world, and some among you desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you away from them so that He might test you. Certainly He has excused you, for Allah is gracious to the faithful.2345

۞ إِذْ تُصْعِدُونَ وَلَا تَلْوُۥنَ عَلَىٰٓ أَحَدٍۢ وَٱلرَّسُولُ يَدْعُوكُمْ فِىٓ أُخْرَىٰكُمْ فَأَثَٰبَكُمْ غَمًّۢا بِغَمٍّۢ لِّكَيْلَا تَحْزَنُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَا فَاتَكُمْ وَلَا مَآ أَصَٰبَكُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ

3:153When you were fleeing without paying any attention to anyone, while the Apostle was calling you from your rear, He requited you with grief upon grief, so that you may not grieve for what you lose nor for what befalls you, and Allah is well aware of what you do.6

Commentary on this passage

Verse 149

1.The history of Uhud is very strange. After a few days the Muslim people observed heavenly support from Allah. They saw effects of their faith and intimacy. They felt the consequence of heavenly aids in Angels but on the first sight of booty, they forgot the orders of Prophet (s.a.w.s.) and disregarded the leader of army and became satanic. It is true the end of these people should be miserable and that they should suffer disgrace. their bad deeds have been recorded in the Holy Quran. It is surprised to say that Abu Sufyan was the leader of infidels army and Talha Bin Uthman was the supporter of an army. He shouted: If you are a true Muslim, try to send me into the hell or go to the heaven by stroke of my sword. But Ali (a.s.) cut his legs in one stroke and he fell on the ground from his horse and started crying for help. Ali (a.s.) released him, this was a reflection of the mercy of Ali (a.s.). After that Hamza (a.s.) was killed in the battle while fighting and Muslims started plundering the property of the opposition. Khalid Bin Walid, the commander of infidel’s army attacked a second time and the whole situation of the battle changed. Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) was wounded. Hinda (l.a.) gnawed the liver of Hamza (a.s.). Today, Abu Sufyan, Khalid and Hinda are honoured as Islamic by some Muslims and the personality of Ali (a.s.) and Hamza (a.s.) is ignored. Rather, the followers of Muawiyah abuse the personality of Ali (a.s.).

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

    According to Allamah Muraghi this denotes Abu Sufyan who is the tree of mischief for Islam. Upon the return from Uhud he galvanized the infidels to finish off the remaining Muslims. But all of a sudden awe descended on them and they refrained from it.

    Such fierce battle that even the slain ones should feel it. As in the beginning of the Battle of Uhud. The Muslim archers were shooting arrows from behind and hand to hand combat was in progress on the battlefield - but -

    Should they remain steadfast on their mission or take part in plundering the booty?

    The war booty and the defeat of the infidels.

    All those Muslims who left their posts and began to loot the booty. And those desirous of the Hereafter were those ten people who remained firm with Abdullah Bin Jubair.

    Initially the companions aggrieved the Prophet (s.a.) due to their disobedience then the Almighty made them suffer defeat, slaying of their fellowmen, regret and shame, so that the spirit of obedience is kindled among them. And they understand the result of disobeying. Thus in the future they will not moan the loss of booty or have to suffer injuries in the battle - for that is the secret of success.
