3:2Allah—there is no god except Him—is the Living One, the All-sustainer.

3:3He has sent down to you the Book with the truth, confirming what was [revealed] before it, and He had sent down the Torah and the Evangel1

3:5Nothing is indeed hidden from Allah in the earth or in the sky.

3:6It is He who forms you in the wombs [of your mothers] however He wishes. There is no god except Him, the All-mighty, the All-wise.

3:7It is He who has sent down to you the Book. Parts of it are definitive verses, which are the mother of the Book, while others are metaphorical. As for those in whose hearts is deviance, they pursue what is metaphorical in it, courting temptation, and seeking its interpretation. But no one knows its interpretation except Allah and those firmly grounded in knowledge; they say, ‘We believe in it; all of it is from our Lord.’ And none takes admonition except those who possess intellect.2

3:8[They say,] ‘Our Lord! Do not make our hearts swerve after You have guided us, and bestow Your mercy on us. Indeed, You are the All-munificent.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 3

1.The specialty of Quran is that it is the verifier of all heavenly books and today the proof of all those books is nothing except Quran. It does not however mean that Quran verifies the present form of those books. It verifies the original books and it is not responsible for any distortion in them.

Verse 6

2.According to Majmaul Bayan from this point approximately eighty ayats are about the Christians of Najran who were claiming that Isa (a.s.) was the son of Allah and they had come to Medina to argue with Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.). They blew the bugle in the Prophet’s Mosque and performed their prayer. The Muslims objected to this but the Prophet (s.a.) restrained them and then the debate started. In the captioned verses, firstly reference is made to the power of Allah that He creates in whatever way He likes. It has no connection to the relationship of father and son.

Verse 7

3.After this the novelty of the verse of the Holy Quran is clarified. That some mischief-makers want to take wrong advantage of the ambiguous verses while the knowledge is only with those who are firmly rooted in knowledge (Raasekhuna fii Ilm). It is surprising that mischief-makers themselves relied on Allah and separated the Raasekhuna fii Ilm from the Holy Quran. Being firmly rooted in knowledge necessitates that one should have faith in all verses of Quran and pray that he does not deviate after having being guided and must always be hopeful for Allah’s mercy and dread the day of judgement and every moment he should supplicate before Allah

  2. 2

Mohkam - whose meaning is clear and it does not require any interpretation and Mutashabeh with require exegesis (interpretation). Its meaning could be explained with the help of other ayats and traditions.

  3. Benefit

It should be clear that the Raasekhoona fil Ilm is the necessary conjunction upon Allah otherwise it would mean that only Allah knows the meanings of the ayat. If it would be so, what is the use ofrevealing the ayat? And till now the commentators have not left even a single ayat on Allah and has argued from the interpretation of each ayat and submission is a sign of Rasookh-e-Eimaan (deeply rooted in faith). This has no connection with Raasekhoona fil Ilm (deeply rooted in knowledge).
