Verses 60–70

28. Al-Qasas · The Stories

Makkan88 verses

28:60Whatever things you have been given are only the wares of the life of this world and its glitter, and what is with Allah is better and more lasting. Will you not exercise your reason?*

28:61Is he to whom We have given a good promise, which he will receive, like him whom We have provided the wares of the life of this world, but who will be arraigned on the Day of Resurrection?

28:62The day He will call out to them and ask, ‘Where are My ‘partners’ that you used to claim?’

28:63Those against whom the word had become due will say, ‘Our Lord! These are the ones whom we have perverted. We perverted them as we were perverse ourselves. We repudiate them before You: it was not us that they worshipped.’1

28:64It will be said, ‘Invoke your partners!’ So they will invoke them, but they will not respond to them, and they will sight the punishment, wishing they had followed guidance.

28:65The day He will call out to them and say, ‘What response did you give to the apostles?’

28:66That day all information will be withheld from them, so they will not question one another.2

28:67As for him who repents, has faith and acts righteously, maybe he will be among the felicitous.3

28:68Your Lord creates whatever He wishes and chooses: they have no choice. Immaculate is Allah and exalted above [having] any partners that they ascribe [to Him].

28:69Your Lord knows whatever their breasts conceal, and whatever they disclose.

28:70He is Allah, there is no god except Him. All praise belongs to Him in this world and the Hereafter. All judgement belongs to Him, and to Him you will be brought back.*

Commentary on this passage

Verse 63

1.It means that devotees gave reference of their leaders that they had caused them to err. So the poser turned towards the leaders and they refused clearly that we did not force them and they have declared themselves on our call just as we ourselves did and adopted the way of prior chief and they had not compelled us. After this Allah drew the sketch of their helplessness and said: The main thing is that they have made such associate Gods that they are unable to answer and why do these foolish people not think that if they are unable to listen and answer in this world, how can they be helpful on the day of Resurrection?

Verse 68

2.This is a universal law that people have no right to give decision. As Allah has created them and He knows better, what He has created and how? Power and selection should be in His hands and people have no right to interfere. After the demise of the Prophet (s.a.) people opposed thIs law openly and till today Muslims are suffering its punishment.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

The 60th ayat indicates that the proof of a sound mind lies in preferring the Hereafter to this world and giving preference to that which shall be forever rather than transient things. Anything other than this is senselessness. Thus some scholars have recommended bequeathing property only to the pious as they alone were ‘sane’.

  2. 1

Qaul denotes punishment and Haqq means obligatory and compulsory. What a scene it would be. The followers would be laying the blame on their leaders while the leaders would wash their hands off their followers and instead blame their leaders in turn. No one shall refer to reason and logic that should be the basis of faith and religion. Thus all of them shall become liable for punishment. It is better if man gives up blind faith and follows the path of reason and logic in this world itself.

  3. 2

The news becoming secrets and going into the dark - it indicates there is more scope for excuses or replies.

  4. 3

Please note that the word Asa with regard to the creatures is used to denote a hope of some good from them and ‘Makr’ is used for fear and terror in those things. But in the words of the Creator it is used for firm conviction and surety.

  5. Benefit

Five divine qualities are mentioned in the 70th ayat in reply to the polytheists. (1) Oneness (2) Deserving of praise and adoration (3) The Master of the world and the Hereafter (4) The absolute Monarch (5) Everyone has to ultimately return to Him and none else.
