Makkan88 verses

28:44You were not on the western side when We revealed the commandments to Moses, nor were you among the witnesses.1

28:45But We brought forth other generations and time took its toll on them. You did not dwell among the people of Midian reciting to them Our signs, but it is We who are the senders [of the apostles].2

28:46And you were not on the side of the Mount when We called out [to Moses], but [We have sent you as] a mercy from your Lord that you may warn a people to whom there did not come any warner before you, so that they may take admonition.3

28:47And lest—if an affliction were to befall them because of what their hands have sent ahead —they should say, ‘Our Lord! Why did You not send us an apostle so that we might have followed Your signs and been among the faithful?’

28:48But when there came to them the truth from Us, they said, ‘Why has he not been given the like of what Moses was given?’ Did they not disbelieve what Moses was given before, and said, ‘Two magicians abetting each other,’ and said, ‘Indeed we disbelieve both of them’?

28:49Say, ‘If you are truthful, bring some Book from Allah better in guidance than the two on them so that I may follow it.’

28:50Then if they do not respond to you[r] [summons], know that they only follow their desires, and who is more astray than him who follows his desires without any guidance from Allah? Indeed Allah does not guide the wrongdoing lot.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 44

1.Apparently when Allah spoke to Moosa (a.s.) for the first time and appointed him as His Apostle he was on the left side of mount Sinai and revelation of Allah revealed from different directions and the link of conversation continued between Allah and His slave.

Verse 47

2.The behaviour of infidels is same in every era that they find different kinds of pretexts to refuse the words of Allah. Sometimes they demanded a miracle and when it was shown they refuted saying it was not what they had demanded. Show us as some prophets of past had showed. Allah gave him warning and said: If they were true in their claim they would not falsify this Apostle and would believe in him. Sometimes they said: This is magic and God forbid, all religious leaders were magicians and their magic verified and supported each other. Allah gave a clear answer, guidance is necessary anyhow even if this was all magic. Which is that book of guidance that was revealed from Allah and who has possessed that book, bring that can guide the community and people can come to the right path. Otherwise the responsibility of going astray will be on those people.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

Please note that when Moosa (a.s.) was traveling from Madayan to Egypt he was facing west and when the Bani Israel were traveling from Egypt to Syria they faced East and thus some scholars have explained the word Mushreqen to denote the followers of Firon.

  2. 1

When people expressed doubts in divine revelation the Almighty told the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) to tell them that he was not an eyewitness to all the incidents that he has reported. Thus if it is not through revelation how did he come to know of these facts?

  3. 2

According to the book, Muqaddas there is a difference of 2000 years between Moosa (a.s.) and the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) during which various generations and communities were born and expired.

  4. 3

Before the advent of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) the period was known as the period of Fitrat. No revelation descended during this time and there was no prophet living. But the propagation and defence of religion was entrusted to the successors of the previous prophet. The ayat mentions this period. It does not mean that before that time there was no prophet. It is permissible and against divine justice.

  5. Benefit

The oppressors have compared Moosa and Haroon (a.s.) not to magicians but as magic personified, which is the last stage of evil character.
