Verses 47–59

27. An-Naml · The Ant

Makkan93 verses

27:47They said, ‘We take you and those who are with you for a bad omen.’ He said, ‘Your bad omens are from Allah. Indeed, you are a people being tested.’1

27:48There were nine persons in the city who caused corruption in the land and did not set things right.2

27:49They said, ‘Swear by Allah that we will attack him and his family by night. Then we will tell his heir that we were not present at the murder of his family and that we speak the truth.’

27:50They devised a plot, and We [too] devised a plan, but they were not aware.

27:51So observe how was the outcome of their plotting, as We destroyed them and all their people.3

27:52So there lay their houses, fallen in ruin because of their wrongdoing. There is indeed a sign in that for a people who have knowledge.

27:53And We delivered those who had faith and were Godwary.

27:54[We also sent] Lot, when he said to his people, ‘What! Do you commit this indecency while you look on?

27:55Do you approach men with [sexual] desire instead of women?! Indeed, you are a senseless lot!’

27:56But the only answer of his people was that they said, ‘Expel Lot’s family from your town! They are indeed a puritanical lot.’

27:57So We delivered him and his family, except his wife. We ordained her to be among those who remained behind.

27:58Then We poured down upon them a rain [of stones]. Evil was that rain for those who had been warned!

27:59Say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, and Peace be to the servants whom He has chosen.’ Is Allah better, or the partners they ascribe [to Him]?4

Commentary on this passage

Verse 49

1.What a pity! To oppose the Apostle of Allah and destroy his family, they swear to Allah and make it their support. Many questions in the history of Islam have been solved from this incident that how Muslims being the slaves of self interest, to achieve their aim utilizing the name of Allah and sometimes make Allah their witness in opposition to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) and sometimes by taking false oath, prevent the honorable female members of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) to answer the call of nature, otherwise hearing the voice of dogs, the noble females would not be ready to tum back and remember the warning of the Prophet (s.a.w.s.): Beware! Do not go, anyone of you to Hawwab that the dogs of that place have to bark.

Verse 54

2.If the disease of homosexuality were to spread and the community still does not come to its senses even after seeing its effects, such as the disease of’ Aids’ and its consequences. But instead of preventing legality of homosexuality, the community makes it popular and also searches for different kinds of remedies for this disease.

Verse 59

3.In our speeches and writings this auspicious verse is the fountainhead of our culture and traditions that has given two instructions to all Muslims. They should praise Allah and send salutation to Allah’s chosen people. To praise Allah is the sign that a man does not consider any wonders, his own personal property. On the contrary, whatever he has is bestowed by Allah’s numerous blessings and ritual prayers and salutation are the signs of such deeds that a man does not consider all this as his personal merit. He is not able to directly address the Almighty. On the contrary he gains Allah’s favor with the help of Allah’s chosen people and Allah accepts his message through his selected people who have reached to their high status of perfection : If these people of Allah were not there, nobody would reach to the destination and no way would remain for evolution of mankind. In other verses of Holy Quran also there is mention about the salutation for these enduring people, they deserve salutation and peace also. This is not an innovation of anyone but it is a complete example of the teachmgs of the Lord of Universe and to act upon. It is a duty upon every sincere Muslim.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

It should be clear that divination regarding good and bad has its origin in the belief of man that nothing occurs without a cause. Now one who has no faith in Allah will have to search for the causes in conjectures and in spite of being educated they consider 13 an unlucky number or become worried when a cat has crossed their path etc. It is these superstitious people that provide the impetus to the fortune-tellers and soothsayers. While the Holy Quran has announced that destiny is related to the Almighty and one should have faith in Him.

  2. 1

Teerah -A bad omen when chastisement visited the people of Samood due to their evil deeds they began to say it was due to the ill omen of Saleh (a.s.). The Almighty clearly replied that Saleh (a.s.) had no role in this. It is only a divine punishment and a test for them.

  3. 2

    Rahet - A group of 3 to 9 persons.

  4. 3

The first ‘Makr’ is in the meaning of deceit and intrigue and the second ‘Makr’ is in the sense of the response to the previous one. The word has not been changed so that it could be explained to them that Allah also knows what they know and He always has the fitting response to all their actions. The background of the destruction of Samood was their oppression and injustice and it is the destined end of injustice and oppression. This oppression first came in the form of the plot to kill Saleh (a.s.) and later in the killing of the She-Camel. Thus their guilt was finally proved. Benefit: Here the five ayats mention 12 favours of Allah and states that the polytheists were deviated and ignorant, they did not prefer to accept good advice, they were unaware of the high position of Allah and they had no basis. The polytheists could perceive the bounties but they do not regard Allah as the giver of these bounties.

  5. 4

It is a rhetorical question whose reply is known to every sensible person that man cannot utter the name of anyone other than Allah. And no one is able to create the universe like Allah and also to help the people in calamities and difliculties.
