26:25He said to those who were around him, ‘Don’t you hear?!’

26:26He said, ‘Your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers!’

26:27He said, ‘Indeed your messenger, who has been sent to you, is surely crazy!’

26:28He said, ‘The Lord of the east and the west and whatever is between them—should you exercise your reason.’

26:29He said, ‘If you take up any god other than me, I will surely make you a prisoner!’

26:30He said, ‘What if I bring you something [as an] unmistakable [proof]?’

26:31He said, ‘Then bring it, should you be truthful.’

26:32Thereat he threw down his staff, and behold, it was a manifest python.

26:33Then he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white and bright to the onlookers.

26:34He said to the elite [who stood] around him, ‘This is indeed an expert magician

26:35who seeks to expel you from your land with his magic. So what do you advise?’

26:36They said, ‘Put him and his brother off for a while, and send heralds to the cities

26:37to bring you every expert magician.’

26:38So the magicians were gathered for the tryst of a known day,

26:39and the people were told: ‘Will you all gather?!’

26:40‘Maybe we will follow the magicians, if they are victors!’1

26:41So when the magicians came, they said to Pharaoh, ‘Shall we have a reward if we were to be the victors?’

26:42He said, ‘Of course; and you will be among members of my inner circle.’

26:43Moses said to them, ‘Throw down whatever you have to throw!’

Commentary on this passage

Verse 40

1.Firon claimed to be the Lord of universe but due to his falsehood, he was helpless, First he took the help of magicians against Moosa (a.s.) and then sent his army to pursue him and discussed with advisers at every step and finally when the magicians departed, he threatened them of punishment but in vain. Then he also decided to raid and chase but as a result his whole army drowned into the sea. Allah also showed his master plan and Firon with his chosen men came from the chase and drowned into the sea. Then Allah made his Apostle Moosa (a.s.) and his companions as heir to the cities of Firon and clarified if we would not have given them time to chase them, how could they have come out from their homes and how could they have drowned? And how could the whole city have been vacated? The preacher and his companions should keep patience and after that to take revenge or make arrangement is in Allah’s hands and this responsibility not on people.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

The madness of Firon is such that first he calls Moosa (a.s.) insane. Then he calls him Aleem (knowing) while Moosa (a.s.) continued to say Inkuntum Talamoon (If you are of those who know) pointing towards Firon’s insanity.

Benefit: Please note that the miracle of Moosa (a.s.) is a expression of fear on one hand and hope on the other. This is the gist of the call of the Prophets.

Benefit: The staff used to assume various forms depending on the circumstances. Sometimes it became a snake. sometimes a python.

Benefit: Note the arrangement of providence that Firon is gathering a crowd to assert his divinity while Moosa (a.s.) is happy that he would have a good chance to propagate his message. Please note that Firon has mentioned nearness as a reward which means that Allah’s nearness is the best reward. If only the people realize this point.

  2. 1

This was a diplomatic statement to instigate the people while the religion of the magicians was the same as that of Firon’s people. The aim was to say that if the magicians were victorious we shall follow them. That is we shall remain on our religion and its truthfulness will be further established.
