Verses 105–118
23. Al-Muminoon · The Believers
Makkan118 verses
23:105‘Was it not that My signs were recited to you but you would deny them?’
23:106They will say, ‘Our Lord! Our wretchedness overcame us, and we were an astray lot.
23:107Our Lord! Bring us out of this! Then, if we revert [to our previous conduct], we will indeed be wrongdoers.’
23:109Indeed there was a part of My servants who would say, ‘‘Our Lord! We have believed. So forgive us, and have mercy on us, and You are the best of the merciful.’’
23:110But you took them by ridicule until they made you forget My remembrance, and you used to laugh at them.
23:111Indeed I have rewarded them today for their patience. They are indeed the triumphant.’
23:112He will say, ‘How many years did you remain on earth?’
23:113They will say, ‘We remained for a day, or part of a day; yet ask those who keep the count.’2
23:114He will say, ‘You only remained a little; if only you had known.
23:115Did you suppose that We created you aimlessly, and that you will not be brought back to Us?’
23:116So exalted is Allah, the True Sovereign, there is no god except Him, the Lord of the Noble Throne.*
23:117Whoever invokes besides Allah another god of which he has no proof, his reckoning will indeed rest with his Lord. Indeed the faithless will not be felicitous.
23:118Say, ‘My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of the merciful.’

Commentary on this passage
Verse 115
1.The biggest issue of life and main purpose of human being is his desires. Those who think that they should live lavish lives because one day they may die do not put any value on their existence. And utmost limit of existence and utmost limit of life is nothing except death. This is an extremely strange theory that something is created for the destination of deficiency and dispute. The real value of human life is that it should have aim and his aim would not be inferior to his existence, so that his journey of life should be towards a higher plane and not descend towards a lower one. And there is no other creature higher than mankind. Therefore the aim of life should be concerned with Allah and this should be the aim of immortal life so that the inclination should be to travel towards perfection and an entrusted thing should be handed over to the trusted man.
Verse 117
2.The whole declaration of this Surah is that it begins with the message of deliverance and ends on the deliverance of infidels and immediately thereafter invokes supplication for seeking mercy and blessings, so that people be accompanied with the help of Allah and His blessings and be included in the group of pious and obedient people and would not be enjoined to the group of unjust people.
Footnotes
Explanations of words and phrases in these verses
- 1
Please note that this word is used in Arabic for shooing away a dog. This indicates that infidels and oppressors are not more than a dirty animal in view of Allah. It is thus surprising that Muslims consider polytheists and infidels their masters and make them the controller of their destinies.
- 2
The infidels mean to say that they are not in a condition to calculate all that. Only those who are able to calculate can give the correct reply. Another background is also found here. That these people were not able to calculate their tenure in the world. They used to think it will last forever. But now they realize it was not more than a single day.
Benefit
The owner of the Universe is introduced in 116th ayat in five words. The word ‘Allah’ denotes His comprehensiveness of qualities and perfections. The word ‘Malik’ declares His authority and rulership. The word ‘Haqq’ indicates the reality of His existence and His truth. Finally “Rabbul Arshil Kareem” (Lord of the honourable dominion) indicates the exalted position of his Lordship.
Benefit
A beauty of this Surah lies in the fact that it begins with the declaration of the success of the be1ievers and ends with the assertion that the disbelievers shall never be successful. This indicates that the Surah teaches us the method to avoid the fate of the disbelievers.
