Verses 1–17

23. Al-Muminoon · The Believers

Makkan118 verses

23:1Certainly, the faithful have attained salvation

23:2—those who are humble in their prayers,

23:3avoid vain talk,1

23:4carry out their [duty of] zakat,

23:5guard their private parts,

23:6(except from their spouses or their slave women, for then they are not blameworthy;

23:7but whoever seeks [anything] beyond that—it is they who are transgressors),2

23:8and those who keep their trusts and covenants

23:9and are watchful of their prayers.

23:10It is they who will be the inheritors,

23:11who shall inherit paradise and will remain in it [forever].

23:12Certainly We created man from an extract of clay.

23:13Then We made him a drop of [seminal] fluid [lodged] in a secure abode.

23:14Then We created the drop of fluid as a clinging mass. Then We created the clinging mass as a fleshy tissue. Then We created the fleshy tissue as bones. Then We clothed the bones with flesh. Then We produced him as [yet] another creature. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators!

23:15Then indeed you die after that.

23:16Then you will indeed be raised up on the Day of Resurrection.

23:17Certainly We created above you seven levels and We have not been oblivious of the creation.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 1

1.This blessed verse has clarified that faith alone is not enough to be a Muslim and pious and it is also necessary to fulfill different responsibilities to obtain success and salvation and these responsibilities are as follows: (1) Fear of God and humility before Him is necessary (2) Paying of Zakat (3) Abstaining from absurdity (4) Consistence with chastity, one should not be lustful (5) In proportion to society, should be careful about entrusted things and promises and should perform the prayer in time. There is no possibility of salvation without these conditions. In another tradition it is stated that Ali (a.s.) recited this Ayat after his birth and the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) certified that salvation is obtained only because of you. Just as love with family members of the Holy Prophet invites people to complete their responsibilities and takes people to salvation.

Verse 12

2.This is not the degradation of mankind. On the contrary it is the argument of Allah’s grandeur. A man should know that Allah has taken him out from lowliness and elevated him to this stature. Indeed Allah is the Appraiser and we should be thankful to Him and it is very necessary to pay respect to Him. Pride gives adornment to deviation and not to humanity.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

This is a Meccan Surah and the command of Zakat was revealed in Medina. Therefore the Zakat mentioned therein is not obligatory Zakat. It is ordinary charity, which is called as recommended Zakat.

  2. 1

Laghw - useless talk. Malak Yameen - Slave girl. Aadoon - Those who exceed the limits. Warithoon - Those who get Paradise for their faith and good deeds. As if they receive an inheritance without working for it. This is the best teaching of the purity of deed. That inheritance is not achieved by working for it. It just comes to a person. The believers must also try to work for Paradise. They should aim for seeking Allah’s pleasure. After this they would get Paradise like inheritance.

  3. 2

This indicates that except for a legal wife and slave girl there is no permissible outlet for sexual urge. That’s why Imam Sadiq (a.s.) has prohibited masturbation although according to Ruhul Bayan this is allowed according to Hanafi and Hanbali Schools of Islamic law.

  4. Benefit

Please note that there are three causes for worldly success and achievements - Everlasting, needlessness and honour - and the success in the Hereafter has four aspects: They shall never be destroyed, absolute needlessness, honour from all aspects and a knowledge that saves us from every type of ignorance.
