21. Al-Anbiyaa · The Prophets

Makkan112 verses

21:82Among the devils were some who dived for him and performed tasks other than that, and We were watchful over them.1

21:83And [remember] Job, when he called out to his Lord, ‘Indeed distress has befallen me, and You are the most merciful of the merciful.’*

21:84So We answered his prayer and removed his distress, and We gave him [back] his family along with others like them, as a mercy from Us and an admonition for the devout.

21:85And [remember] Ishmael, Idris, and Dhul-Kifl—each of them was among the patient.3

21:86We admitted them into Our mercy. Indeed, they were among the righteous.

21:87And [remember] the Man of the Fish, when he left in a rage, thinking that We would not put him to hardship. Then he cried out in the darkness, ‘There is no god except You! You are immaculate! I have indeed been among the wrongdoers!’

21:88So We answered his prayer and delivered him from the agony; and thus do We deliver the faithful.

21:89And [remember] Zechariah, when he cried out to his Lord, ‘My Lord! Do not leave me without an heir, and You are the best of inheritors.’

21:90So We answered his prayer, and gave him John, and cured for him his wife [of infertility]. Indeed, they were active in [performing] good works, and they would supplicate Us with eagerness and awe and were humble before Us.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 83

1.Different kinds of traditions are famous concerning Ayyub (a.s.). It is even said that he was suffering from such a disease that it affected his whole body and people avoided him. Though Allah protects His Apostles from such disease. Anyhow it is admitted that Allah took his trial in all manners and he remained patient. On1y on the last stage, he prayed and Allah cured him and granted him all the bounties due to his patience and also gave increment in it. As it behoves Allah’s kindness with the patient ones and we find the same meaning in the verse “Innallaaha Ma’ as-Sabereen”.

Verse 87

2.Noon means fish and Yunus (a.s.) is called Zannoon because being fed up of the dishonesty of his community he left the city leaving his community to divine chastisement. So Allah caused him to enter the belly of a fish when he was sailing in boat. He repented for deserting his community and said If I had not left my people Allah would not have surrendered me to the fish. This is the best of example to take lesson that a reformer and leader should always remain with people in happiness and sorrow and should not leave his community as orphans being displeased otherwise he will become involved in other troubles.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

Lan Naqdar Alaihe denotes the shortage of Sustenance and Zann is in the meaning of knowledge. Therefore it has no connection with the position of prophethood.

  2. 1

Shayateen denotes Jinns that used to dive for pearl and construct buildings. Regarding Sulaiman (a.s.) there is a saying of Amirul Momineen (a.s.) that if anyone had been capable of eternal life it would have been Sulaiman bin Dawood (a.s.), for whose service men and Jinns were pressed and who was given the position of prophethood and proximity to Allah.

  3. *

2, Despite extreme sort of calamities Ayyub (a.s.) used the word ‘muss’ - ‘Touched’. This is the manner of prophethood and the best example for enduring patience, That Allah made him exemplar for the pious people. That they should not expect worldly comfort and enjoyment in exchange of their worship as most people do.

  4. 3

Regarding Dhulkifl there is a difference of opinion whether he was a prophet or not. The Holy Quran has mentioned him to be righteous and patient and it is sufficient for his greatness. Further research is not necessary. Although his mention in the discussion about prophets may indicate his prophethood. He could be named Dhulkifl due to his patience or due to the representation of the oath of worship.
