Madinan286 verses

2:16They are the ones who bought error for guidance, so their trade did not profit them, nor were they guided.

2:17Their parable is that of one who lighted a torch, and when it had lit up all around him, Allah took away their light, and left them sightless in a manifold darkness.1

2:18Deaf, dumb, and blind, they will not come back.

2:19Or that of a rainstorm from the sky, wherein is darkness, thunder and lightning: they put their fingers in their ears due to the thunderclaps, apprehensive of death; and Allah besieges the faithless.

2:20The lightning almost snatches away their sight: whenever it shines for them, they walk in it, and when the darkness falls upon them, they stand. Had Allah willed, He would have taken away their hearing and sight. Indeed Allah has power over all things.

2:21O mankind! Worship your Lord, who created you and those who were before you, so that you may be Godwary

2:22—He who made the earth a place of repose for you, and the sky a canopy, and He sends down water from the sky and with it brings forth crops for your sustenance. So do not set up equals to Allah, while you know.2

2:23And if you are in doubt concerning what We have sent down to Our servant, then bring a surah like it, and invoke your helpers besides Allah, if you are truthful.3

Commentary on this passage

Verse 17

1.This ayat indicates the parable of hypocrite’s character by giving different examples. Like a blind man, who walks along with a lamp and others take advantage of its light but he himself remains in darkness. The hypocrites helped. Islam by saying that Islam is spread everywhere and its fame has reached the other states and its foundation is deep and very strong. Hearing this the people gathered around them. Then Allah took away their light and left them in utter darkness. Its result was severe punishment from Allah.

Another example was of heavy rainfall with loud thunder and lightning. They all feared that their death was near. They put their fingers into their ears for fear of death. The lightning whenever shines on them, they walk and when it becomes dark, they stand still though they could hear and see but it is no use for them. Allah would have certainly taken away their abilities of hearing and seeing but all blame would come on Allah. That is why Allah did not take away their abilities and left them wandering in darkness.

The above examples are the best evidence of Islam’s grandeur but if man does not gain anything it is bad luck of mankind. Hearing the loud thundering made hearts frightened and lightning which made Abu Lahab and Abu Jahl’s eyes dazzled. Besides this the hypocrites remained like blind and deaf. It was their bad luck and inefficiency. These are lessons for those who live near centres of Islamic activities yet they remain on their previous ways. They only watch the thunder and lightning but do not follow the right path. Their condition is worse than that of Muslims who live in villages and hamlets and their character is also lower than that of the hypocrites.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

The Knowledge of Islam is like a crest including rights and duties towards it. Right and duties cannot be separated. No one has the rights to separate them. The teaching of Islam introduces the worship of God and His bounties so that the human being can understand. Without thanking the Creator and His bounties prayer is of no use. Allah has stated that a person has no right to separate the rights and duties, which are laid upon them. Another example of the whole world has been given. Pray to God from first to last, as He is the Master, the Creator of the world and Hereafter. Besides this one can pay homage to another but cannot prostrate in front of anybody else. Prayers are obligatory acts for Allah only and not for Prophets or angels.

  2. 2
