Madinan286 verses

2:142The foolish among the people will say, ‘What has turned them away from the qiblah they were following?’ Say, ‘To Allah belong the east and the west. He guides whomever He wishes to a straight path.’12

2:143Thus We have made you a middle nation that you may be witnesses to the people, and that the Apostle may be a witness to you. We did not appoint the qiblah you were following, but that We may ascertain those who follow the Apostle from those who turn back on their heels. It was indeed a hard thing except for those whom Allah has guided. And Allah would not let your prayers go to waste. Indeed Allah is most kind and merciful to mankind.3

2:144We certainly see you turning your face about in the sky. We will surely turn you to a qiblah of your liking: so turn your face towards the Holy Mosque, and wherever you may be, turn your faces towards it! Indeed those who were given the Book surely know that it is the truth from their Lord. And Allah is not oblivious of what they do.4

2:145Even if you bring those who were given the Book every [kind of] sign, they will not follow your qiblah. Nor shall you follow their qiblah, nor will any of them follow the qiblah of the other. And if you follow their desires, after the knowledge that has come to you, you will be one of the wrongdoers.5

2:146Those whom We have given the Book recognize him just as they recognize their sons, but a part of them indeed conceal the truth while they know.6

Commentary on this passage

Verse 142

1.In the beginning the Muslims prayed facing Baitul Muqaddas which was since the ancient time a Qibla of the Jews and they taunted about it because Muslims faced towards it during Namaz. But the divine wisdom was in this very thing that Jews should be kept pleased in comparison to the Polytheists. After that when Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) migrated to Medina and Islam was established to some extent one day in Namaz-e-Zuhr after two rakats were complete Allah revealed that the remaining Namaz should be performed facing the Ka’ba. And the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) did this on the basis of which many Muslims were surprised. The Masjid where this incident occurred is called Masjid-e-Qiblatain. But after that the question arose among the Muslims that why was the first Qibla taken from the Jews and why Ka’ba was not made the Qibla from the first day? The Almighty Allah replied that He wanted to test their faith in this way. That whether you follow My command or choose what you like.

Verse 143

2.Allah has made the followers of Prophet (s.a.w.s.) a medium nation because some individual persons among the followers of Islam were the bearer of the witness of the deeds of the community. Otherwise the whole community together is not fit to be witness of an ordinary case. Then how can it become the witness of the whole of humanity. It was because of few individuals. Just as Bani Israel were said to be the best in the worlds because of some prophets that appeared among them.

Verse 144

3.The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) did not dislike Baitul Muqaddas and neither a Prophet can be displeased by the command of Allah. He was aggrieved due to the taunts of the Jews and the Lord of the world did not even tolerate this sorrow and by changing the Qibla He arranged for the satisfaction of His beloved.

Verse 145

4.Some people are so prejudiced that even after seeing the reality cannot change the Qibla how can they be expected to change their faiths?

Verse 146

5.The holy ayats have clarified that nothing was concealed from the Jews and they recognized the facts like their children but yet did not confess. The same Jewish nature was inculcated in the Muslims who were seeing the scene of Wilay at of Ali (a.s.) in Ghadeer yet were ready to deny it.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

The holy Quran refers to people who object to divine commandments to be fools and idiots.

  2. 2

East and West are mentioned because of all the directions these are the only real directions.

  3. 3

Some people have explained this to be a middle way between the retaliation of the Jews and the forgiveness of the Christians, between the materialism of the disbelievers and the spirituality of the Christians. But both these views are not in conformity to the testimony that is the effect and the result of the ‘medium nation’.

  4. 4

This denotes the House of Ka’ba which is the Qibla of Islam and in all cases it has to be considered the Qibla. Even those who are in the Masjidul Haraam face towards it.

Benefit: In the 144th ayat, the initial command is Fawalla Wajhaka (singular) then it is plural (you all turn your races) so that it is clear that this command is not only for the Prophet (s.a.) and the word Shatra shows that all the rows of the world are like a circle around the Ka’ba.

  5. 5

It is only to show the seriousness and intensity of the command otherwise question does not arise of the Prophet (s.a.) following the selfish desires.

  6. 6

Question does not arise regarding the doubt and uncertainty of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.). It is said keeping in view the importance of the invitation towards keeping away from the doubting of the Jews. That one who has knowledge must not fall into any kind of doubt.
