Verses 76–95

19. Maryam · Mary

Makkan98 verses

19:76Allah enhances in guidance those who are [rightly] guided, and lasting righteous deeds are better with your Lord in reward, and better at the return [to Allah].

19:77Have you not regarded him who defies Our signs, and says, ‘I will surely be given wealth and children’?

19:78Has he come to know the Unseen, or taken a promise from the All-beneficent?1

19:79No indeed! We will write down what he says, and We will prolong his punishment endlessly.2

19:80We shall take over from him what he talks about, and he will come to Us alone.3

19:81They have taken gods besides Allah that they may be a [source of] might to them.

19:82No Indeed! Soon they will disown their worship, and they will be their opponents.*

19:83Have you not regarded that We unleash the devils upon the faithless to urge them vigorously?4

19:84So do not make haste against them; indeed We are counting for them, a counting [down].

19:85The day We shall gather the Godwary toward the All-beneficent, on mounts,5

19:86and drive the guilty as a thirsty herd towards hell,

19:87no one will have the power to intercede [with Allah], except for him who has taken a covenant with the All-beneficent.

19:88They say, ‘The All-beneficent has taken a son!’

19:89You have certainly advanced something hideous!

19:90The heavens are about to be rent apart at it, the earth to split open, and the mountains to collapse into bits,

19:91that they should ascribe a son to the All-beneficent!

19:92It does not behoove the All-beneficent to take a son.6

19:93There is none in the heavens and the earth but he comes to the All-beneficent as a servant.

19:94Certainly He has counted them [all] and numbered them precisely,

19:95and each of them will come to Him alone on the Day of Resurrection.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 77

1.According to narration, it refers to Aas Bin Vaail, the father of Amr Bin Aas who had uttered such nonsense and had been reprimanded in harsh terms by the Lord.

Verse 88

2.Infidels, Polytheists, Jews and Christians, all have had the audacity to specify someone as God’s son and the Lord of the Worlds has responded to the insinuations in varied ways. But at this juncture, a rather severe manner is adopted: The earth and the heavens should have been obliterated according to this belief. This belief is the ruin of monotheism and what remains in the universe after the demise of monotheism? Man should at least be intelligent enough to distinguish between slavery and filial relationships, While till the very last, the universe is busy in worship of His Grandeur and Majesty, How then does the question of filial relations arise?

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

The Hamza in this indicates denial. That they had no information of the unseen.

  2. 2

This ‘Seen’ is in the meaning of testimony, that ‘everything is recorded with Us.’

  3. 3

This is in the meaning of the destruction of inheritance. That he will be deprived of all the wealth and children that he had nurtured and shall be raised alone in Qiyamat.

  4. *

    Morad- End result.

Benefit: Both possibilities are found in the 82nd ayat that the worshippers become deniers of their deities or the deities deny their worshippers and become their opponents. According to tradition this worship is not Rukus and Sajdahs (genuflections and prostrations). But obeying a creature in contravention to the obedience of the Creator is itself a kind of worship.

  5. 4

Its actual implication is to constantly trouble, which is the aim of the infidels.

  6. 5

Wafad-it is the plural of wafid which means a guest. Wird is a thirsty animal.

  7. 6

Attributing sons implies allegation of needfulness while Allah is not needful. Then a son is the part of the father. While Al1ah is absolutely One. No one and nothing constitutes a part of Him.

  8. Benefit

It should be clear that in the holy ayats, the words of Hashr and wafad are used for the pious and for the criminals, the words sooq and wird are used. Then the sinners will be herded towards Hell and the pious ones will be brought in the presence of Rahman instead of being taken to paradise. And His presence is a much better position. That is why the word Rahman also carries unprecedented eloquence.
