18:84Indeed We had granted him power in the land and given him the means to all things.1
18:85So he directed a means.
18:86When he reached the place where the sun sets, he found it setting over a warm sea, and by it he found a people. We said, ‘O Dhul Qarnayn! You will either punish them, or treat them with kindness.’2
18:87He said, ‘As for him who is a wrongdoer, we will punish him. Then he shall be returned to his Lord and He will punish him with a dire punishment.
18:88But as for him who has faith and acts righteously, he shall have the best reward, and we will assign him easy tasks under our command.’
18:89Thereafter he directed another means.
18:90When he reached the place where the sun rises, he found it rising on a people for whom We had not provided any shield against it.
18:91So it was, and We were fully aware of whatever [means] he possessed.
18:92Thereafter he directed another means.
18:93When he reached [the place] between the two barriers, he found between them a people who could hardly understand a word [of his language].
18:94They said, ‘O Dhul Qarnayn! Indeed Gog and Magog are causing disaster in this land. Shall we pay you a tribute on condition that you build a barrier between them and us?’3
18:95He said, ‘What my Lord has furnished me is better. Yet help me with some strength, and I will make a bulwark between you and them.4
18:96Bring me pieces of iron!’ When he had levelled up between the flanks, he said, ‘Blow!’ When he had turned it into fire, he said, ‘Bring me molten copper to pour over it.’5

Commentary on this passage
Verse 84
1.Is the first disagreement about Zulqarnain regarding his identity? Some people have called him an angel while others have interpreted him as Sikandar Maqrooni (Alexander The Great) the disciple of Aristotle. Both arguments are inconsistent. This is primarily an incident regarding the earth. Secondly, Alexander was an idol worshipper while Zulqarnain was a believer and unconnected with Alexander in any way even if Alexander would have been a Zulqarnain of his time. The second difference of opinion in Zulqarnain is of nomenclature and according to some people he was called Zulqarnain because of two horns while others regard him thus because of his long life spanning two centuries and a few say he was named Zulqarnain because of his sovereignty from the East to the West. In any case, he had a variety of capacities and systems with which he travelled till the very ends of East and West and chastised the enemies of Allah in the West. Then he examined the savages of the East and had made arrangement for the safety of people in the middle regions.
Verse 94
2.According to Shaykh Muraghi, Gog and Magog belonged to Tatar and Mughal communities whose origin was Turkey and their influence spread from Tibet to Antarctic Ocean. One of their examples is in Changez and Halaku Khan and the harrier, which Zulqarnain built is behind Ox us and this place is now famous as Babul Hadid. (And Allah Knows Best).
