18:63He said, ‘Did you see?! When we took shelter at the rock, indeed I forgot about the fish—and none but Satan made me forget to mention it!—and it made its way into the sea in an amazing manner!’

18:64He said, ‘That is what we were after!’ So they returned, retracing their footsteps.

18:65[There] they found one of Our servants whom We had granted a mercy from Ourselves, and taught him a knowledge from Our own.

18:66Moses said to him, ‘May I follow you for the purpose that you teach me some of the probity you have been taught?’

18:67He said, ‘Indeed you cannot have patience with me!

18:68And how can you have patience about something you do not comprehend?’1

18:69He said, ‘You will find me, God willing, to be patient, and I will not disobey you in any matter.’

18:70He said, ‘If you follow me, do not question me concerning anything until I myself first mention it for you.’2

18:71So they went on and when they boarded the boat, he made a hole in it. He said, ‘Did you make a hole in it to drown its people? You have certainly done a monstrous thing!’3

18:72He said, ‘Did I not say that you cannot have patience with me?’

18:73He said, ‘Do not take me to task for my forgetting, and do not be hard upon me.’4

18:74So they went on until they came upon a boy, whereat he slew him. He said, ‘Did you slay an innocent soul, without [his having slain] anyone? You have certainly done a dire thing!’

Commentary on this passage

Innumerable peculiarities are found in the incident of Moos a and Khizr (a.s.), which cannot be decided on, by general laws. As an example: Moosa and Yusha (a.s.) became oblivious to the fish, to pass by the confluence and not meet the pious man there, the swimming of the fish into the sea through the tunnel route and escaping the notice of them both, and lack of mention about another incident of significance, decision in the night to return as it was determined, to meet Khizr (a.s.) near the confluence. Then the solication of promise by Khizr and oral acceptance by Moosa (a.s.) the repeated objections, in spite of this, the alerting of Moosa (a.s.) by Khizr but remaining inattentive etc. To substantiate these truths, a detailed requirement is essential. In summary, Allah by this whole event wanted to explain to people that people should not deem themselves superior and that at the time, a man of higher status could have existed in any part of the world and could possibly become your mentor.

Verse 63

1.The objection of Moosa (a.s.) despite his promise is the indication of the fact that the fulfillment of a promise is the best of deeds but in spite of this it is a necessity to protest against an action which is apparently against the law as per the rules, as Amr Bil Ma’roof is an obligatory duty. This is rather not the issue of Moosa and Khizr (a.s.) but a lesson for Muslims.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

    Khubr - Knowledge and recognition

  2. 2

    Zikr - Recitation

  3. 3

Imr - Strange and distasteful matter

  4. 4

Arhaaq - To be strict and order something that seems beyond the capacity of that person. It should be clear that the forgetfulness mentioned in these ayats is not actually forgetfulness that can be a negative quality in a prophet. It is a kind of visualizing the scene. Otherwise first it should have mentioned the forgetfulness of both of them and the second time it would have mentioned the forgetfulness of only Yusha. And that was not the forgetting of the fish. It was forgetting the incident?

This requires a great deal of contemplation.

  5. Benefit

Lataghrug has the laam of Aaqebat (previous), because the action performed by Khizr (a.s.) would not result in anything but the drowning of the people in the boat. Although Khizr did not plan to drown the people, it was only what Moosa (a.s.) feared.
