Makkan111 verses

17:52The day He calls you, you will respond to Him, praising Him, and you will think you remained [in the world] only for a little while.’1

17:53Tell My servants to speak in a manner which is the best. Indeed Satan incites ill feeling between them, and Satan is indeed man’s manifest enemy.2

17:54Your Lord knows you best. He will have mercy on you if He wishes, or punish you, if He wishes, and We did not send you to watch over them.

17:55Your Lord knows best whoever is in the heavens and the earth. Certainly, We gave some prophets an advantage over the others, and We gave David the Psalms.3

17:56Say, ‘Invoke those whom you claim [to be gods] besides Him. They have no power to remove your distress, nor to bring about any change [in your state].

17:57They [themselves] are the ones who supplicate, seeking a recourse to their Lord, whoever is nearer [to Him], expecting His mercy and fearing His punishment.’ Indeed your Lord’s punishment is a thing to beware of.*

17:58There is not a town but We will destroy it before the Day of Resurrection, or punish it with a severe punishment. That has been written in the Book.

17:59Nothing keeps Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them. We gave Thamud the she-camel as an eye-opener, but they wronged her. We do not send the signs except as warning.4

17:60When We said to you, ‘Indeed your Lord encircles those people,’ We did not appoint the vision that We showed you except as a tribulation for the people and the tree cursed in the Quran. We warn them, but it only increases them in their outrageous rebellion.5

Commentary on this passage

Verse 57

1.Those whom they call their deities means Angels and Isa (a.s.) and Uzair (a.s.) etc who themselves are in prayer seeking Allah’s nearness. What is the use to believe in their divinity? Otherwise these poor people are not capable of searching Allah’s nearness.

Verse 58

2.Some commentators agree that all the towns will be destroyed before the day of resurrection. Though it is not so. This is an announcement of destruction of seditious people and reappearance of Imam Mahdi (a.s.). As mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawood that even if one day of life time remains, Allah will extend that day up to this and ask people to bring anyone from the members of the Holy Prophets family having my same name if you can. Allah is just. He will justify the whole world. And approximately the same topic is given in the book Ibne Majah 2 page no. 4083.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

‘Yaum’ denotes Qiyamat, ‘Dawat’ denotes the blowing of the bugle. ‘Hamd’ denotes attendance with obedience.

  2. 2

    Nazaa-To create mischief.

  3. 3

Zaboor- Book, Generally it is used for the book of Dawood (a.s.). Dawood (a.s.) is mentioned probably because he was famous as a king. Thus if Allah can make a king, Prophet and give him a book He can make an orphan, like the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s) also a prophet and a Messenger, because Allah is well aware of what He does. Or it could imply that just as Dawood (a.s.) received a revealed book after Moosa (a.s.), the Holy Quran could also be revealed after that. It could also indicate that Zaboor is an example of the best admonishments. It contains supplication and psalms and also ethical matters. It can be an indication that it contains the mention of the inheritance of the earth by the righteous. which is also mentioned in the Holy Quran.

  4. Benefit

The 57th ayat is the proof that those who are regarded as deities are themselves in search for means and nearness of Allah and they are fearful of divine chastisement. Thus why the people who consider them Gods are not fearful of Allah? The word waseela (means) occurs twice in the Holy Quran and is the best indication of the justification of Tawassul (seeking mediation).

  5. 4

The Almighty Allah did not show the miracles to Quraysh demanded by them because it has been His practice to destroy the nations that disbelieved in the miracles demanded by them.

  6. 5

According to some commentators the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) had seen in dream his entry into Mecca. Thus when he signed the treaty of Hudaibiyah the companions began to doubt him. This is a reply to them. Some are of the opinion that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) had seen the Bani Umayyah jumping on his pulpit and this aggrieved him. From this aspect the ‘accursed tree’ indicates Bani Umayyah. Although Fakhruddin Razi has mentioned that it possibly denotes the Jews. Now there is no doubt that both of them are same.
