Makkan128 verses

16:35The polytheists say, ‘Had Allah wished, we would not have worshiped anything besides Him—neither we, nor our fathers—nor we would have forbidden anything without His sanction.’ Those who were before them had acted likewise. Is the apostles’ duty anything but to communicate in clear terms?1

16:36Certainly We raised an apostle in every nation [to preach:] ‘Worship Allah, and shun fake deities.’ Among them were some whom Allah guided, and among them were some who deserved to be in error. So travel over the land and observe how was the fate of the deniers.2

16:37Even if you are eager for them to be guided, indeed Allah does not guide those who mislead [others], and they will have no helpers.

16:38They swear by Allah with solemn oaths that Allah will not resurrect those who die. Yes indeed [He will], it is a promise binding upon Him, but most people do not know,3

16:39so that He may clarify for them what they differ about, and that the faithless may know that they were liars.

16:40All that We say to a thing, when We will it, is to say to it ‘Be!’ and it is.

16:41Those who migrate for the sake of Allah after they have been wronged, We will surely settle them in a good place in the world, and the reward of the Hereafter is surely greater, had they known

16:42—those who are patient and who put their trust in their Lord.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 37

1.Greed is not a good attribute for human beings but the greed of guidance is definitely a good attribute and this can be created in a man who loves very much to follow the way of Allah and has good feelings towards the community and wants that his community follows the right path and never go astray. But it is clear that this greed and desire and intention are not triangular; but anyhow, it is like a feeling of love that is desirous for man’s guidance but it can’t bring him to the destination. After reaching the destination if a man would be rightly guided he would be disappointed from blessing and rewards and the Prophet cannot be desirous of this action that his people would be disappointed from the reward and the hereafter.

Verse 40

2.Allah Who has created the whole universe by the word ‘Be’ and it is, has no difficulty to create the world again. Allah can raise a tumult by saying ‘Be’ and can make the dead people alive in the Hereafter. To doubt this is like doubting the existence of the universe.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

Balaaghul Mubeen is the plain delivery of divine message, with explanation and exposition after which there remains no doubt and scope for misinterpretation. It is one of the great responsibilities of the prophets and they struggled to fulfill this duty and it is not in anyway related to Jabr (forced destiny).

  2. 1

To transfer the responsibility of our evil deeds and bad actions to the Almighty has been the practice of deviated people in every age. The belief of pre-destination is actually not the invention of any particular community. It has been the philosophy of deviated people in every age, that has been transferred to successive generations.

  3. 2

The messenger can be external as well as internal. From the Islamic point of view, reason is the internal messenger.

  4. 3

Jahada means to bear difficulties. Jahada in swearing means that it was emphasized greatly so that people should trust them that Qiyamat is not going to occur.

  5. Benefit

‘Emigrate for Allah’ is the sign of perfection of faith. And the condition of oppression indicates that as far as possible we should bear it and only if it is in compliance of Islamic wisdom should we emigrate and not that as soon as we see difficulties we flee leaving the battlefield
