Makkan128 verses

16:27Then, on the Day of Resurrection, He will disgrace them, and say, ‘Where are My “partners” for whose sake you used to defy [Allah]?’ Those who were given knowledge will say, ‘Indeed today disgrace and distress pursue the faithless.’1

16:28—Those whom the angels take away while they were wronging themselves. Thereat they submit: ‘We were not doing any evil!’ ‘Yes, [the angels say to them,] indeed Allah knows best what you used to do!

16:29Enter the gates of hell to remain in it [forever]. Evil is the [final] abode of the arrogant.’

16:30But those who were Godwary will be asked, ‘What is it that your Lord has sent down?’ They will say, ‘Good.’ For those who do good in this world there will be a good [reward], and the abode of the Hereafter is better, and the abode of the Godwary is surely excellent:*

16:31the Gardens of Eden, which they will enter, with streams running in them. There they will have whatever they wish, and thus does Allah reward the Godwary

16:32—those whom the angels take away while they are pure. They say [to them], ‘Peace be to you! Enter paradise because of what you used to do.’

16:33Do they not consider that the angels may come to them, or your Lord’s edict may come? Those who were before them had acted likewise; Allah did not wrong them, but they used to wrong themselves.2

16:34So the evils of what they had earned visited them, and they were besieged by what they used to deride.3

Commentary on this passage

Verse 28

1.The limit of immodesty of infidels and hypocrites is that they never give up lying and even in their last moments say that they are obedient. Allah has clarified that if that is true your repentance will not be of any use.

Verse 31

2.What a difference of thought of infidels and hypocrites and faithful believers! If a faithful believer is asked about the Holy Quran, he do not utter a word except good. Infidels and Polytheists interpret the Holy Quran in an entirely baseless way.

3.The comparison of the dignity of the heaven cannot be compared with the bounties of the world. If a man gets his provisions according to his needs in the world it is more than enough. To the extent of what question is arising to fulfill his desires. Man’s desires are unlimited by one way and bounties of the world are also limited, but Allah the Almighty has created the heaven as a remedy of all desires. If a man wants anything, he gets it at once. The earth is created for the necessities and the heaven is created for the desires.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

We should ponder upon this question which shall be posed by Allah in Qiyamat, ‘Where are those partners that you ascribed to Me?’ It is enough to realize the helplessness of Qiyamat. It is worse than a thousand punishments of Hell because spiritual pain is more severe than physical pain.

  2. Benefit

The word Khair in the 30th ayat is a comprehensive word which announces that Quran is a goodness at every stage of life. This word is more appropriate than the word Nur, Shiqa, Mercy etc. because the Almighty has announced that such a person will be rewarded ‘Hasana’ just as their belief was firm and beautiful (Haseen). It is the reward of this way of life and the destination of the pious.

  3. 2

This Nazar is in the meaning of ‘awaiting’. That the infidels are waiting to see the angels of punishment before they could bring faith.

  4. 3

Haaqa Behim - It denotes ‘surrounding from all sides’. The mention of deeds in place of recompense denotes that the deeds themselves shall assume physical shapes and appear in Qiyamat and surround the one who has committed them. There is no need lo assume that recompense denotes deeds because the personification of deeds is nearly an established Islamic belief.
