Verses 119–128

16. An-Nahl · The Bee

Makkan128 verses

16:119Moreover, your Lord will indeed be forgiving and merciful to those who repent after they having committed evil out of ignorance and reform themselves.

16:120Indeed Abraham was a nation [all by himself], obedient to Allah, a Hanif, and he was not a polytheist.1

16:121Grateful [as he was] for His blessings, He chose him and guided him to a straight path.

16:122We gave him good in this world, and in the Hereafter he will indeed be among the Righteous.

16:123Thereafter We revealed to you [saying], ‘Follow the creed of Abraham, a Hanif, who was not a polytheist.’

16:124The Sabbath was only prescribed for those who differed about it. Your Lord will indeed judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that about which they differ.2

16:125Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good advice and dispute with them in a manner that is best. Indeed your Lord knows best those who stray from His way, and He knows best those who are guided.3

16:126Should you retaliate, retaliate with the like of what you have been made to suffer, but if you are patient that is surely better for the steadfast.

16:127So be steadfast, and you cannot be steadfast except with Allah [’s help]. And do not grieve for them, nor be upset by their guile.

16:128Indeed Allah is with those who are Godwary and those who are virtuous.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 120

1.After mention about ignorance of hypocrites and polytheists the Quran has mentioned about Ibrahim (a.s.), He was respected by the infidels of Mecca. This was a sign then why didn’t they follow him? Ibrahim (a.s.) was obedient to Allah and thankful to Allah also. He was a chosen Apostle of Allah and he was on the right path. He had good virtues and was the righteous person of the Hereafter. Allah had ordered the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) to obey him because the way of both Prophets was same and infidels will be satisfied that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) has not brought a new religion against Ibrahim (a.s.).

Verse 126

2.Some commentators have stated that after the battle of Uhud Muslims had decided that if they get a chance, they would also cut up the dead bodies of their enemies. Allah, the Lord of Universe informed them- Be careful! Do not make haste, it is better to be patient. It is not easy to be patient without the help of Allah but patience has its reward.

3.From this aspect this Ayat is Medinite but though the actual surah is Meccan because the incident of Uhud had occurred in Medina and not in Mecca.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

The words of Thumma, mimba’ade zaalek and mimba’adeha indicates that acceptance of repentance is not any easy thing, because it requires abstinence, regret and improvement of deeds. Mere utterance of seeking forgiveness is useless.

  2. 1

The commentators have mentioned four meanings of the word Ummat, out of whom one denotes a proper nation and one denotes Imam or leader.

  3. 2

There were various contradictory opinions among the Jews as regards Saturday. It was also debated whether it is a day of rejoicing or not. Whether hunting is allowed on Saturday or not? Whether any work can be performed on this day or not.

  4. 3

Hikmat denotes presenting some facts supported by arguments. Moizze Hasana means to say something in such a way that the person addressed automatically realizes his mistake, and there is no need to chastise him. Jidaale-Ahsaan means the aim is to express the truth. One should not aim only for one’s supremacy or the supremacy of one’s opinion.

  5. Benefit

Here four characteristics of Ibrahim (a.s.) are mentioned and also mentioned are the five excellences that he was granted. Altogether 40 bounties are mentioned in Surah Nahl. That is why it is referred to as Surah Neam.
