15:55They said, ‘We bring you good news in truth; so do not be despondent.’

Tafsir

Commentary on this passage

1.Seeing the angels Ibrahim (a.s.) offered food to them. They refused to eat, and Ibrahim (a.s.) became fearful that perhaps chastisement was going to descend. The angels said: We have come to give you the good news and have brought the news of chastisement for the community of Lut (a.s.). An angel is harbinger of glad tidings for one and the same angels is a warner for another. Allah has settled the grandeur of His Apostles. He has made them propagators as well as warners and this is good for the virtuous and pious people but at the same time bad news for disobedient and sinful people and for this there is no effect on dignity of Allah.

The severe punishment on the community of Lut (a.s.) is mentioned in the Holy Quran and this incident points out towards people of community who have adopted the same deeds and their end would be like the community of Lut (a.s.). The advanced countries have legalized homosexuality. This is the best example of destroying the countries. The true believers should be alert to see the beginning and become satisfied that falsehood will perish one day.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

It should be clear that even though the birth of Ismail (a.s.) had also occurred in old age, the passage of 10-12 years more certainly is cause for surprise and this surprise was definitely not based on despair in any case.

  2. 1

This indicates that the query of Ibrahim (a.s.) and his astonishment was not due to despair. It was as a result of confidence.

  3. 2

The promise of salvation for the progeny of Lut (a.s.) accompanied with the news of the destruction of his wife indicates that wife is not included among one’s progeny. And neither is the wifehood of a prophet a guarantee against the chastisement of Allah. Chastisement could be deflected only by faith and good deeds and not by wifehood or relationship.

  4. 3

The people of Lut (a.s.) were so terrible that they aimed to commit evil even with the angels and they began to congratulate each other that they have found a beautiful prey and no one was prepared to heed Prophet Lut (a.s.). In such circumstances what else could the Almighty have done except to send punishment on them.

  5. 4

The prophet is the father of his nation therefore the daughters of his nation are referred to as his daughters, otherwise Lut (a.s.) did not have so many daughters to give in marriage to all the people.

  6. *

The mention of the extinction of their generations in the punishment shows that since their action was aimed towards achieving their own extinction, the Almighty punished them in such a way that they would become extinct.
