Commentary on this passage

Verse 87

1.One of the teachings of Yaqoob’s (a.s.) was that one should depend on Allah alone. He should not be disappointed from Allah’s mercy and hope for Allah’s blessings and keep working hard. That is why Yaqoob (a.s.) said “Search for Yusuf (a.s.) and do not despair of Allah’s mercy”. This is the dignity of Muslims and their faith.

Verse 88

2.The result of tyranny is very bad and unjust people have to suffer a lot in the world. The condition of the brothers of Yusuf (a.s.) is a lesson. How they were imploring before Yusuf (a.s.)! In the beginning they threw him into the well due to jealousy and today they beseeched for charity. But Allah forgives those who repent for their sins.

Verse 92

3.How will one bring emotional control like Prophet (a.s.)? Yusuf (a.s.) forgave his brothers generously and the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) had stated at the time of victory of Mecca. “What do you expect from me”? People answered, you are the brother of Merciful and the brother of bountiful. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said: All right go, you are free and you will not be called to account. Just as my brother Yusuf (a.s.) said, “There shall be no reproof against you this day. May Allah forgive you.”

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

It is the perfection of character of prophethood that even under such trying circumstances he continued to dispense advice to his children that one should not despair of Allah’s mercy and that despair befits only the disbelievers.

  2. 1

Here ‘Zur’ indicates hunger which is the evil effect of famine. ‘Bezate Muzja’ is a paltry thing.

  3. 2

According to some scholars there are two words for ‘erring one’ in Arabic, Khati and Mukhti. When a person knowingly commits a mistake he is called Khati and when he does it unknowingly he is called Mukhti.

  4. 3

Tathreeb - It means scolding or punishing. When a person begins to calculate the mistake of another, it is called Tathreeb. Yusuf (a.s.), by the way of favour said that he would not consider their mistakes. That is, their action of throwing him in the well; and later selling him off as a slave, and causing his father to lament, and heaped allegations on his brother, then made allegations against Yusuf (a.s.), then blamed his father to have deviated in the love of Yusuf (a.s.), etc.

  5. *

It is surprising that the sons of a prophet sometimes blame him for manifest error and sometimes for an old error. This proves that even normal people could imagine a prophet to be erring if the element of jealousy comes in between
