Makkan111 verses

12:79He said, ‘God forbid that we should detain anyone except him with whom we found our wares, for then we would indeed be wrongdoers.’1

12:80When they had despaired of [moving] him, they withdrew to confer privately. The eldest of them said, ‘Don’t you know that your father has taken a [solemn] pledge from you by Allah, and earlier you have neglected your duty in regard to Joseph? So I will never leave this land until my father permits me, or Allah passes a judgement for me, and He is the best of judges.2

12:81Go back to your father, and say, ‘‘Father! Your son has indeed committed theft, and we testified only to what we knew, and we could not have forestalled the unseen.

12:82Ask [the people of] the town we were in, and the caravan with which we came. We indeed speak the truth.’’ ’3

12:83He said, ‘No, your souls have made a matter seem decorous to you. Yet patience is graceful. Maybe Allah will bring them all [back] to me. Indeed He is the All-knowing, the All-wise.’4

12:84He turned away from them and said, ‘Alas for Joseph!’ His eyes had turned white with grief, and he choked with suppressed agony.

12:85They said, ‘By Allah! You will go on remembering Joseph until you wreck your health or perish.’

12:86He said, ‘I complain of my anguish and grief only to Allah. I know from Allah what you do not know.’

Commentary on this passage

Verse 83

1.Here a question arises that when brothers of Yusuf (a.s.) did not blame Binyamin and were explaining about the true state of affairs, then how did Yaqoob (a.s.) blame them? Is this suitable for Allah’s prophet that he would blame without investigating the truth? The commentators have given a number of explanations. Some people think that these people had created an idea of stealing for Binyamin. Though he was not a thief. Some people have described in another way, but it is clear that the brothers of Yusuf (a.s.) had no right to say that your son has stolen and we give witness according to our knowledge. They saw a bowl in the luggage of Binyamin only and they had no knowledge of stealing at all. Wide knowledge is required in this case for witness. Yaqoob (a.s.) is absolutely right that at first you yourself have prepared a story of stealing and you are not the witness of stealing but you are only the witness that it came out from his luggage. This is the only difference between Yusuf (a.s.) and his brothers, that Yusuf (a.s.) arrested his brother by saying that the bowl is recovered from him and his brothers and said it was theft and that was a baseless blame. The difference between the innocent and outsiders is that innocent person is cautious in his statement and outsiders speak whatever they like.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

The name of the eldest brother is said to be Rubeen or Shamoon or Yahooda and he was apparently more responsible type of a person and he did not agree to return till he had assured the fulfillment of the oath given to their father.

  2. 1

It is the perfection of precautionary behaviour on the part of Yusuf (a.s.) that he did not mention the “theft” of his brother. He rather said, “One with whom our property was found,” because he knew that Binyamin had not stolen it.

  3. 2

It is a matter of debate whether ‘Kabeer’ (elder) denoted elder in age or maturity of thoughts and apparently both these aspects are applicable.

  4. 3

This time the brothers of Yusuf (a.s.) were not guilty that is why their tone was different otherwise after throwing Yusuf (a.s.) in the well they did not even have courage to say anything.

  5. 4

The same thing was said by Yaqoob (a.s.) after getting the news of Yusuf ( a.s.) death and it is the sign of Allah’s Saints that they face every difficulty with patience and tranquility.

  6. Benefit

It seems from the ayats that after the incident of Binyamin the lamentation of Yaqoob (a.s.) became more severe and his eyes became white. This led to the other sons to be sarcastic.
