Makkan109 verses

10:71Relate to them the account of Noah when he said to his people, ‘O my people! If my stay [among you] be hard on you and [also] my reminding you of Allah’s signs, [for my part] I have put my trust in Allah. So conspire together, along with your partners, leaving nothing vague in your plan, then carry it out against me without giving me any respite.1

10:72If you turn your back [on me], I do not ask any reward from you; my reward lies only with Allah and I have been commanded to be of those who submit [to Allah].’

10:73But they impugned him. So We delivered him and those who were with him in the ark and We made them the successors, and We drowned those who denied Our signs. So observe how was the fate of those who were warned!*

10:74Then after him We sent [other] apostles to their people. They brought them manifest proofs, but they would not believe something they had denied before. Thus do We seal the hearts of the transgressors.2

10:75Then, after them, We sent Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh and his elite with Our signs, but they acted arrogantly and they were a guilty lot.

10:76When the truth from Us came to them, they said, ‘This is indeed plain magic!’

10:77Moses said, ‘Do you say of the truth when it comes to you [that it is magic]? Is this magic? Magicians do not find salvation.’

10:78They said, ‘Have you come to us to turn us away from what we found our fathers following, so that supremacy may be yours in the land? We will not believe in the two of you.’

Commentary on this passage

Verse 71

1.When infidels and Polytheists started to harass the Prophet (s.a.) in different ways, they called him mad and magician and decided to kill him. Allah also reminded about the bygone Apostles and their communities so that they can see their own faces in the mirror that they themselves are saying and doing all those things which were done by the previous communities and Apostles keep on giving messages from Allah to them, which were given by the Apostles of earlier time. But when people refused to accept the messages and were bent on harassing the prophet (a.s.) challenged them relying on divine help challenged the nation and no one could cause any harm. They themselves were destroyed. In this way, your message, your confidence and your challenges will also come before you and you will also know your result.

Verse 78

2.The way of the forefathers becomes a calamity for every misguided person and he is not ready to leave it. Though in fact it is only an excuse and a person seeing his status in danger. refuses the truth and for taking the support of other people gives reference of fathers and forefathers.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

This ayat proves that leaving alone the exhortation of the religious people, the irreligious cannot even stand their existence, while the pious people challenge everyone on the basis of their faith in Allah.

  2. Benefit

The 73rd ayat has made it clear that salvation was only through the Ark of salvation and this salvation was not restricted to just escape from drowning. They were also given the wealth and property of the unjust people. Also the drowning of the unjust people guaranteed the believers that they shall not be troubled by the unjust ones in future, which is the worldly benefit of faith and piety. As for the rewards of the Hereafter, they are much more than this.

  3. 2

It denotes Ibrahim, Hud and Saleh (a.s.) who were not accepted by the unbelievers because they (the unbelievers) had previously denied those realities. And this is the greatest hurdle on the path of truth, that one goes so far into deviation that it is difficult for him to retrace his steps.

  4. Benefit

The repealed mention of the word ‘truth’ in opposition to ‘magic’ indicates that even if magic is effective, it is baseless and it has not an iota of truth. The magician can never be successful because he cannot see anything beyond worldly benefits. Thus we cannot imagine that he shall ever get salvation and success.
