9. At-Tawba · The Repentance

Madinan129 verses

9:94They will offer you excuses when you return to them. Say, ‘Do not make excuses; we will never believe you. Allah has informed us of your state of affairs. Allah and His Apostle will observe your conduct, then you will be returned to the Knower of the sensible and the Unseen, and He will inform you concerning what you used to do.’

9:95They will swear to you by Allah when you return to them, that you may leave them alone. So leave them alone. They are indeed filth, and their refuge shall be hell, a requital for what they used to earn.1

9:96They swear to you that you may be reconciled to them. But even if you are reconciled to them, Allah shall not be reconciled to the transgressing lot.2

9:97The Bedouins are more obdurate in unfaith and hypocrisy, and more apt to be ignorant of the precepts that Allah has sent down to His Apostle, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.3

9:98Among the Bedouins are those who regard what they spend as a loss, and they watch for a reversal of your fortunes. Theirs shall be an adverse turn of fortune, and Allah is all-hearing, all-knowing.

9:99Yet among the Bedouins are [also] those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and regard what they spend as [a means of attaining] nearness to Allah and the blessings of the Apostle. Now, it shall indeed bring them nearness, and Allah will admit them into His mercy. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 97

1.Be it known that infidelity and Islam are not a legacy of town and village. The town life is not a security of Islam for the noblemen of Quraysh and Jews of Medina are born and the village life is also not a guarantee of infidelity and hypocrisy haply great sincere people may be born. Indeed there is a difference of the townsmen and villagers that people of village generally remain aloof from knowledge and information and this is the reason of their ignorance. Faith and sincerity are quite different, as the verse of the Holy Quran has stated in the last part. The result of remaining far from information is that, they spend their money in the way of Allah and think this is a loss for them. If they would be clever like townsmen, they would not spend the money. The effect of their infidelity is that they are waiting for the misfortune of Muslims, if they all be ruined we would be free from this loss.

Anyhow Arabian nomads are characters whose hearts and souls are full of infidelity and ignorance. They were well known for this among Arabs wherever they would be; even if they would live in a civilized area.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

Calling the hypocrites Rijs ‘din’ shows that hypocrisy is indeed a dirty thing that is present in the hearts of the two-faced people and whose end is nothing but Hellfire. This also shows that those from whom ‘Rijs’ has been removed do not, have any scope of hypocrisy. Hypocrisy is the enmity of these personages and it is present in their enemies.

  2. 1

Aloofness from the hypocrites implies not dealing with them and ignoring them and aloofness of Allah is to be away from them and dissociate with them. Because ‘rijs’ and impurity deserve to be shunned.

  3. 2

This is a warning to the believers that they must not be pleased with those with whom Allah is not happy.

  4. 3

Arabi: Anyone and anything related to the Arabs, and Araabi only refer to the nomads. The plural of Arabi is Arab and the plural of Araabi is Araab. Though it is not the plural of Arabi and neither the word Araab is the plural of Arab. Araab are the nomad Arabs even though they live in cities and villages.
