Madinan129 verses
9:73O Prophet! Wage jihad against the faithless and the hypocrites, and be severe with them. Their refuge shall be hell, and it is an evil destination.1
9:74They swear by Allah that they did not say it. But they certainly did utter the word of unfaith and renounced faith after their Islam. They contemplated what they could not achieve, and they were vindictive only because Allah and His Apostle had enriched them out of His grace. Yet if they repent, it will be better for them; but if they turn away, Allah shall punish them with a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter, and they shall not find on the earth any guardian or helper.2
9:75Among them are those who made a pledge with Allah: ‘If He gives us out of His grace, we will surely give the zakat and we will surely be among the righteous.’
9:76But when He gave them out of His grace, they begrudged it and turned away, being disregardful.
9:77So He caused hypocrisy to ensue in their hearts until the day they will encounter Him, because of their going back on what they had promised Allah and because of the lies they used to tell.3
9:78Do they not know that Allah knows their secret [thoughts] and [hears] their secret talks, and that Allah is knower of all that is Unseen?
9:79Those who blame the voluntary donors from among the faithful concerning the charities—and as for those who do not find [anything] except [what] their means [permit], they ridicule them—Allah shall put them to ridicule, and there is a painful punishment for them.

Commentary on this passage
Verse 74
1.From the signs of hypocrites, the greatest sign is lying and hypocrisy is not possible without lying; otherwise they would have to confess their infidelity.
2.Commentators and historians have written that on the return journey from Tabuk expedition, some hypocrites decided to push the Prophet (s.a.) down the mountain and kill him and they also startled the camel for it, but Al1ah saved His Apostle. The lightning flashed and the path became illuminated. Ammar Yasir arrested the hypocrites and registered their names with the Caliph. This is the character of Muslims of this category. Their lips chanted: We believe and testify; while practically they were plotting to kill the Prophet (s.a.).
Verse 75
3.Thalaba bin Haatif asked the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) to pray for him so that he becomes rich. The Prophet (s.a.) said: Thankfulness on less is sufficient. But he insisted and the Prophet (s.a.) prayed for him and Allah made him rich. He started grazing his cattle in the forest and gave up prayers. After a few days the Prophet (s.a.) sent agents to collect Zakat. He said: This is a kind of Jizya. So this Ayat was revealed. The Prophet (s.a.) informed him about this Ayat. Thalaba came and wanted to seek forgiveness and give the Zakat but the Prophet (s.a.) refused to accept it and said: Why did he say that Zakat was Jizya? We do not care for the contribution of such people and neither any of their deeds are acceptable.
Verse 79
4.The hypocrites blamed Muslims who spent more in the way of Allah that they were doing this for show off and those who spent despite having less income were labeled the fifth rider as they were also fond of spending; so that the way of charity would be closed.
