9:62They swear to you by Allah, to please you; but Allah and His Apostle are worthier that they should please Him, should they be faithful.*
9:63Do they not know that whoever opposes Allah and His Apostle, there awaits him the Fire of hell, to remain in it [forever]? That is the great disgrace.1

9:65If you question them [regarding their conduct], they will surely say, ‘We were just gossiping and amusing ourselves.’ Say, ‘Were you deriding Allah, His signs, and His apostles?2

9:67The hypocrites, men and women, are all alike: they bid what is wrong and forbid what is right; and are tight-fisted. They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them. The hypocrites are indeed the transgressors.3
9:68Allah has promised the hypocrites, men and women, and the faithless, the Fire of hell, to remain in it [forever]. That suffices them. Allah has cursed them, and there is a lasting punishment for them.
Tafsir
Commentary on this passage
Verse 62
1.The hypocrites think that they will please Allah and His Prophet (s.a.) by their false oaths. Allah showed the path of righteousness and said: If you want to please, please Me by repentance and seeking forgiveness. Your covenant of deceit can be the cause of dislike.
Verse 64
2.The greatest punishment for hypocrites in the world is that they are not satisfied at any time and feel danger at all times. They fear that their secret will be disclosed. Today this danger is less because today there is no one having the knowledge of the unseen among the people. This danger was very severe in the past because the revelation of Quran was in progress. A verse could be revealed anytime and the secret of their hearts could be disclosed.
Verse 66
3.The hypocrites were never believers. The intention for the verse is that until they do not announce mockery they were called Muslims and when ridiculed, they became absolutely infidels and undeserving of forgiveness. One of their groups are leaders who mislead the people and they will never be forgiven even if the weak-minded people might be excused.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses
Benefit
In 62nd ayat the singular pronoun in Yurzohu is the proof that the satisfaction of Allah and the Prophet are not separate. Both their wish and will is one and the same. There is no controversy in this.
- 1
Muhada means opposition. Its root is Hadd, That is man has become distant from that with which he should have remained.
- 2
Khuz and Laab means vain humorous talk. The hypocrites indulged in useless talk on way to the Battle of Tabuk and then later made the excuse that they were not serious. It was only to pass the time. Like some people in the present age make Allah and the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) the butt of their jokes. These are the remaining hypocrites from the Battle of Tabuk that have appeared in the form of believers.
- 3
We should remember that propaganda against Amr bil Ma‘roof and Nahy Anil Munkar is the occupation of the hypocrites. It is not a sign of the people of faith. The ayat has also mentioned five qualities of the hypocrites. Amr bil Munkar (enjoinin bad), Nahy Anil Ma’roof (forbidding good), miserliness, forgetfulness of Allah and transgression, so that the believers may shun these things.
