9. At-Tawba · The Repentance

Madinan129 verses

9:42Were it an accessible gain or a short journey, they would have surely followed you; but the distance seemed too far to them. Yet they will swear by Allah: ‘If we could, we would have surely gone forth with you.’ They [merely] destroy themselves. Allah knows that they are indeed liars.1

9:43May Allah excuse you! Why did you grant them leave [to stay behind] before those who told the truth were evident to you and you had ascertained the liars?*

9:44Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day do not ask you for leave [exempting them] from waging jihad with their possessions and their persons, and Allah knows best the Godwary.

9:45Only those seek a leave [of exemption] from you who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day, and whose hearts are in doubt, so they waver in their doubt.

9:46Had they desired to go forth, they would have surely made some preparations for it; but Allah was averse to arouse them, so He held them back, and it was said [to them], ‘Be seated with those who sit back.’2

9:47Had they gone forth with you, they would have only added to your troubles, and they would have surely spread rumours in your midst, seeking to cause sedition among you. They have some spies among you, and Allah knows best the wrongdoers.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 43

1.Seeing apparent benefits, some Muslims put up lame excuses for the journey to Shaam. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) knew of their intentions that they would create trouble if they accompanied him. So he gave them permission to stay back. In order to flay them the Almighty Allah addressed the Prophet (s.a.) in this tone that you should not have given them permission and should have clarified their falsehood but We have forgiven this matter. Obviously the Prophet (5.a.) had not given permission on his own but Allah made them attentive towards their great mistake by means of this tone; that they have no right to speak against Allah’s will. The next sentence is the proof of this matter that Allah did not like their going out, whose intention was to create trouble and fear in the hearts of Muslims just as Abu Sufyan did at the time of Hunain and lbne Ubayy did at the time of Uhud. As if in the view of Allah the going out only with the intention of Jehad is obligatory and going out with the intention of creating trouble and rebellion is detestable and disliked by Allah.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Ardh - Anything that is obtained easily. Safar-e-Qasid is an easy journey and Shaqga is a difficult voyage.

  2. Benefit

The mention of ‘Afw’ (forgiveness) in the 43rd ayat does not prove any mistake because the ayat has itself clarified that the hypocrites were not going to fight Jihad anyway. Allah ! only intended to familiarize the Muslims with them at the first opportunity. This could not be achieved by ‘Afw’ but it is only for warning the hypocrites and it is not related to the performance or non-performance of any action.

  3. 2

Udwa - The weapons and other things to be used in war. Anbaath - is to go out Jihad. Khabaal is grief in opinion. Fitna denotes creation of doubts in religion which is the ancient quality of the hypocrites. It is indeed astonishing that in spite of such people how all the companions are considered trustworthy?
