7:150When Moses returned to his people, angry and indignant, he said, ‘Evil has been your conduct in my absence! Would you hasten on the edict of your Lord?’ He threw down the tablets and seized his brother by the head, pulling him towards himself. He said, ‘Son of my mother, indeed this people thought me to be weak, and they were about to kill me. So do not let the enemies gloat over me, and do not take me with the wrongdoing lot.’1
7:151He said, ‘My Lord, forgive me and my brother, and admit us into Your mercy, for You are the most merciful of the merciful.
7:152Indeed those who took up the calf [for worship] shall be overtaken by their Lord’s wrath and abasement in the life of the world.’ Thus do We requite the fabricators [of lies].2
7:153Yet [to] those who commit misdeeds but repent after that, and believe—indeed, after that, your Lord shall surely be all-forgiving, all-merciful.
7:154When Moses’ indignation abated, he picked up the tablets whose inscriptions contained guidance and mercy for those who are in awe of their Lord.
7:155Moses chose seventy men from his people for Our tryst, and when the earthquake seized them, he said, ‘My Lord, had You wished, You would have destroyed them and me before. Will You destroy us because of what the fools amongst us have done? It is only Your test, by which You lead astray whomever You wish and guide whomever You wish. You are our master, so forgive us and have mercy on us, for You are the best of those who forgive.3

Commentary on this passage
Verse 150
1.It is an open secret about Moosa and Haroon (a.s.) that Moosa (a.s.) was a very volatile temper and Haroon (a.s.) was very kindhearted. Though it is extremely strange as a Prophet and a responsible person of religion could not be weak tempered. If Haroon (a.s.) was in his place the course of action would be the same as Moosa (a.s.). To throw the tablets of Taurat and wrenching the hair of Haroon (a.s.) points out the state of affairs. When we can’t retaliate to a stranger we show our anger on our own relatives and that is why Moosa prayed for Haroon (a.s.) and picked up the tablets as they were not broken and not spoilt.
Verse 155
2.This is the stage of repentance where Allah ordained that people who did not take part in worshipping the calf can come for repentance. Moosa (a.s.) selected seventy persons and took them to Mount ToOT. There they had to face an earthquake and when they cried out: We did not worship the calf, Allah asked why did you not prevent them? There is no place in Islam for holy men who are aloof from people. There is need for soldiers and propagaters. Those who say that refonnation or community is impossible will also be caught in earthquakes, only then will they know how holy and sacred they are.

Benefit
Apparently the throwing down of the tablets of Taurat and the scolding of Haroon (a.s.) seem strange. However, without this the Bani Israel would not have realized the enormity of the situation, thus it was a necessary step.
- 1
Asar - It denotes severity of anger and also means grief or sorrow. Moosa (a.s.) was aggrieved that Bani Israel had deviated and he was also angry that they could not await his return, and committed such a serious crime.
- 2
This shows that the worshippers of the calf are not from those who repent and they shall always be eligible for divine chastisement and degradation. In the present age the Israeli occupation does not signify that this degradation has ended. Rather, it is itself a degrading thing that a community should be the target of universal curse and its helpers are also using it for their own ends without giving it any recognition.

This Miqaat is repentance and seeking forgiveness. It has no relation with the incident when Moosa (a.s.) took seventy persons to Mount Tur for catching a glimpse of the Almighty. Even though in some traditions both the Miqaat are given as one and the same and two parts of the same incident have been related and its witness is Rajfa after seeking forgiveness there is no chance for it.
