Makkan206 verses

7:1Alif, Lam, Mim, Suad.

7:2[This is] a Book that has been sent down to you—so let there be no disquiet in your heart on its account that you may warn thereby—and as an admonition for the faithful.

7:3Follow what has been sent down to you from your Lord, and do not follow any masters besides Him. Little is the admonition that you take!2

7:4How many a town We have destroyed! Our punishment came to it at night, or while they were taking a midday nap.3

7:5Then their cry, when Our punishment overtook them, was only that they said, ‘We have indeed been wrongdoers!’4

7:6We will surely question those to whom the apostles were sent, and We will surely question the apostles.*

7:7Then We will surely recount to them with knowledge, for We had not been absent.

7:8The weighing [of deeds] on that Day is a truth. As for those whose deeds weigh heavy in the scales—it is they who are the felicitous.5

7:9As for those whose deeds weigh light in the scales—it is they who have ruined their souls, because they used to wrong Our signs.

7:10Certainly We have established you on the earth, and made in it [various] means of livelihood for you. Little do you thank.

7:11Certainly We created you, then We formed you, then We said to the angels, ‘Prostrate before Adam.’ So they [all] prostrated, but not Iblis: he was not among those who prostrated.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 4

1.The method of explanation in this verse is that Allah ordered His Prophet (s.a.) for preaching and said that he must not be disgusted if people refuse. After that people were encouraged to obey and become good followers and in the end, warned them about the bad results and destruction, and mentioned to them how the former communities had been afflicted so that people can come to their senses and not revolt against the commands of Allah.

Verse 7

2.The correct method of accounting is that firstly the communities should be asked how much they have practiced on the teachings, then Apostles will be asked what they preached and in the end they should be made aware that there is no possibility of false statements here because We were present every time in each incident and not absent at any stage.

Verse 10

3.Some commentators have rightly pointed out that it is the greatest favour of Allah that He has given the strength to gain control otherwise if he were left on his own, he would not be capable to gain benefit from any particle of the universe.

Verse 11

4.After reminding them of the favour and their fonn, the children of Adam (a.s.) are made attentive to the fact that the human race is really given a great distinction as Angels were made to prrostrate before their progenitor, Adam (a.s.).

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

This is a Meccan Surah. It contains 206 ayats and the seven ayats (163-170) were revealed in Medina.

  2. 2

First the Prophet was commanded to propagate then the people were ordered to follow him - the duty of the scholars comes before the responsibility of the people.

  3. 3

It is said that the people of Lout (a.s.) were punished at night while the people of Shuaib were chastised during the day.

  4. 4

‘Bas’ also means severity, power and courage and that is why we say Labas. But here it denotes Divine punishment.

  5. Benefit

The encouragement to inquire in the 6th ayat does not contradict the ayat where asking questions is disallowed. Because there are various stages of Qiyamat. On some occasions the mouths shall be sealed while there will be interrogation in some places. In some situations the organs will testify. That is they shall not speak in words but the replies will become apparent in a natural way.

  6. 5

The commentators have narrated many characteristics of the balance on the Day of Judgement. While it is clear that criterion is anything that could calculate the good and bad. It could also be a human being, as Ali (a.s.) is called the Mizaanul Amaal (Scale of deeds).
