Makkan165 verses

6:59With Him are the treasures of the Unseen; no one knows them except Him. He knows whatever there is in land and sea. No leaf falls without His knowing it, nor is there a grain in the darkness of the earth, nor anything fresh or withered but it is in a manifest Book.1

6:60It is He who takes your souls by night, and He knows what you do by day, then He reanimates you therein so that a specified term may be completed. Then to Him will be your return, whereat He will inform you concerning what you used to do.2

6:61He is the All-dominant over His servants, and He sends guards to [protect] you. When death approaches anyone of you, Our messengers take him away and they do not neglect [their duty].

6:62Then they are returned to Allah, their real master. Look! All judgement belongs to Him, and He is the swiftest of reckoners.

6:63Say, ‘Who delivers you from the darkness of land and sea, [when] You invoke Him suppliantly and secretly: ‘‘If He delivers us from this, we will surely be among the grateful’’?’3

6:64Say, ‘It is Allah who delivers you from them and from every agony, [but] then you ascribe partners [to Him].’

6:65Say, ‘He is able to send upon you a punishment from above you or from under your feet, or confound you as [hostile] factions, and make you taste one another’s violence.’ Look, how We paraphrase the signs variously so that they may understand!4

6:66Your people have denied it, though it is the truth. Say, ‘It is not my business to watch over you.’

6:67For every prophecy there is a [preordained] setting, and soon you will know.5

Commentary on this passage

Verse 60

1.One of the main oppositions of Islam was connected with the Doomsday or resurrection and Anyhow it was not understood by the polytheists and infidels. But Allah has solved the problem by the way of sensations. For example you feel drowsy and go to sleep, then indeed you are similar to the dead for you possess no sensation by which you can awaken yourself rather you have to confess that there is a great power which has awakened you. In this way after death the same great power will be awaken us on the Doomsday and the same power will take an account of the good and had deeds of our life and there is no hardship in taking accounts because He is very quick in taking account. After that Allah has mentioned about His favours and said. There is no one to emancipate you from the worldly dreadful incidents except Allah.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

‘Mafatih’ is the plural of ‘Miftah’. That is a key treasure.

  2. 2

Wafat and Maut mean almost the same, That is the lack of life. This word is often metaphorically used for sleep where the limit of ones life ends and he begins a new life upon awaking from sleep. Thus an example of death and the day of raising (Hashr and Nashr) is seen everyday. So that the belief of Qiyamat does not become weak.

  3. 3

The dreadful periods of life are compared to darkness. Whether they are on the land or at sea, only Allah is their saviour. That is why His existence is proved by the example of a sea voyage.

  4. 4

The punishment from the sky could be lightning or storm etc. and the punishment from below may be earthquakes etc.

  5. 5

It is not the criterion of heavenly news that whenever one wishes they would descend. There is fixed time occasion of every news and when it has arrived they become obvious.

  6. Benefit

There is an excellent moral teaching in the 68th ayat. It is applicable for all times. A balance has been maintained therein. In the beginning steadfastness is emphasised and later there is forgiveness for forgetfulness and unintended mistakes. This shows that one should become heedful as soon as one is made aware otherwise it shall be the best example of wickedness
