6:47Say, ‘Tell me, should Allah’s punishment overtake you suddenly or visibly, will anyone be destroyed except the wrongdoing lot?’

Commentary on this passage
Verse 46
1.First Allah has mentioned about his supremacy, power and control and made people attentive towards the helplessness of other deities, that they are absolutely useless in compared to us. After such clarification why do you not understand? This is Our Graciousness we do not send the punishment to anyone except unjust and we send the messenger as an announcer of good news that they can create fear of God in your heart and bring you to the right path.
Bargaining is an old custom in the religion and every person wants his own special status. Though infidels also have said we are ready to accept Islam on condition that poor do not come in your gathering otherwise we do not want to spoil our respective status by sitting along with them. Allah rejected their demand by force and praised the poor people so that it is clarified to these sinful persons if your demand would be fulfilled but you will not believe except only of your prestige and your status and Islam does not consider this kind of faith where feelings of prestige and communal feelings are found.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses
- 1
‘Mublis’ is a one who is in despair. That is why Shaitan is called Iblees, because he has despaired of Allah’s mercy.
- 2
The lost one is called Dabirul-Qawm. That is generation, connection, origin or root etc.
- 3
The Almighty Allah presents His signs in various ways and the people always shun them.
- 4
The disbelievers demanded various miracles. Sometimes they wanted heaps of wealth - sometimes information of the unseen. They also said that it did not befit the Prophet (s.a.) to eat and drink like an ordinary mortal. The Prophet (s.a.) refuted all these views that neither was he the owner of divine treasures nor was the knowledge of the unseen his personal ability. He was also not an angel. He was just a prophet of Allah and had come to propagate Divine commandments. Either they believe him or wait for divine chastisement.
Benefit
The 52nd ayat clearly shows that according to moral law the believers must not be separated from gatherings. Their faith should be respected. Now if on one hand Allah calls one the owner of the best morals and on the other hand asks HIS Prophet to “get up from their midst” it shows that some people had destroyed their faith by their misbehaviour and were not considered believers.
