Makkan165 verses

6:152Do not approach the orphan’s property, except in the best [possible] manner, until he comes of age. And observe fully the measure and the balance with justice.’ We task no soul except according to its capacity. ‘And when you speak, be fair, even if it were a relative; and fulfill Allah’s covenant. This is what He enjoins upon you so that you may take admonition.’1

6:153‘This indeed is my straight path, so follow it, and do not follow [other] ways, for they will separate you from His way. This is what He enjoins upon you so that you may be Godwary.’2

6:154Then We gave Moses the Book, completing [Our blessing] on him who is virtuous, and as an elaboration of all things, and as a guidance and mercy, so that they may believe in the encounter with their Lord.3

6:155And this Book that We have sent down is a blessed one; so follow it, and be Godwary so that you may receive [His] mercy.

6:156Lest you should say, ‘The Book was sent down only to two communities before us, and we were indeed unaware of their studies,’

6:157or [lest] you should say, ‘If the Book had been sent down to us, surely we would have been better-guided than them.’ There has already come to you a manifest proof from your Lord and a guidance and mercy. So who is a greater wrongdoer than him who denies the signs of Allah, and turns away from them? Soon We shall requite those who turn away from Our signs with a terrible punishment because of what they used to evade.4

Commentary on this passage

Verse 152

1.Orphan actually means whose father has died hut this law is for those who are not capable personally even if they be matured, like the insane or foolish etc. It is the responsibility of their guardians that they must utilize their property in a good way and not touch their property until there is benefit for them.

Verse 154

2.Jews were warned that We have mentioned all the commands in Taurat, then what right you have to interfere in Our law; and keeping in mind the infamy of Jews it is announced, so that they might bring faith in the hereafter.

Verse 156

3.Polytheists had two objections. Firstly Taural and Injeel are revealed in other languages and we are ignorant of their teachings and it has no concern with us. Secondly these books belong to Jews and Christians, so what do we have to do with them.

The Almighty Allah replied to both objections in one ayat that We have revealed the Holy Quran in Arabic and have revealed it on an Arab that you do not get a chance to deny it and Our argument would be completed on you.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

It denotes severity, power and height. The age of maturity is the age when ones strength and capabilities are at the peak.

  2. 2

It is said that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) drew a sketch on the ground as said that those were the ways in which Shaitan misled the people.

  3. 3

The commentators have indulged in prolonged discussions about the word ‘Thumma” that it denotes ‘after’ while the Taurat was revealed before the Quran. Although it is very much clear that though it was revealed before its reference is being given later.

  4. 4

Sadaf - It is used when one avoids something and also prohibits other people from it.

  5. Benefit

The completion of the book of Moosa (a.s.) does not mean that no book or shariat is to come after it. Because every law is perfect for its own time. After that period is over there is need for a new legislation. That is probably the reason why Taurat is called a ‘book’ while Quran is referred as ‘bayyinah’ (sign). The laws of Quran are so clear and comprehensive that after this there is no need of a new book or shariat.
