Makkan165 verses

6:1All praise belongs to Allah who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and the light. Yet the faithless equate [others] with their Lord.1

6:2It is He who created you from clay, then ordained the term [of your life]—the specified term is with Him—and yet you are in doubt.2

6:3He is Allah in the heavens and on the earth: He knows your secret and your overt [matters], and He knows what you earn.3

6:4There did not come to them any sign from among the signs of their Lord, but that they used to disregard it.

6:5They have certainly denied the truth when it came to them, but soon there will come to them the news of what they have been deriding.

6:6Have they not regarded how many a generation We have destroyed before them whom We had granted power in the land in respects that We did not grant you, and We sent abundant rains for them from the sky and made streams run for them? Then We destroyed them for their sins, and brought forth another generation after them.45

6:7Had We sent down to you a Book on paper so they could touch it with their [own] hands, [still] the faithless would have said, ‘This is nothing but plain magic.’6

6:8They say, ‘Why has not an angel been sent down to him?’ Were We to send down an angel, the matter would surely be decided, and then they would not be granted any respite.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 1

1.The beginning of this Surah mentions the glory of Allah Who has created the heavens and the earths and made the darkness and the light and also included destiny in it and no other Divine entity has power or control over it and after that no polytheism or deviation from Allah and no intellectual justification remain. And that is why the people, who adopt infidelity are warned by Allah that Allah is Mighty on the basis of nature and on the basis of grandeur. Allah is the Master of the heavens and the earths and He knows your secrets and He can destroy the deviated communities and also can establish the new communities.

Verse 7

2.A few people always desire about the open miracle according to their wish in every era and think whatever they say, Allah will fulfill. These poor people have a fallacy that it is not obligatory to obey their commands that whenever they demand for miracle Allah would act thus; for Allah knows them. If the Holy book would be sent for them according to their demand they would interpret that this is nothing but clear enchantment and then they would argue about the corning of Angels. If Angels would be sent down before them, then all matter would have certainly come to an end and chastisement would not be delayed.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

The feminine of this word is “Adool”, so its meaning is that people do Adool to falsehood from truth. If it is Adl, it means that people set up equals to Allah.

  2. 2

According to commentators the first period is from birth upto death, and the next is form death unto Qiyamat Some think that the second period is from the accounting of deeds to ilaa Mashallah (Towards what Allah desired).

  3. 3

The article “fee” indicates that Allah is meaninglessly used as a deity, otherwise He is the God of the heavens and the earth. He is not the God in the heavens and the earth.

  4. 4

According to Fakhruddin Razi a “qarn” is equal to forty, sixty or eighty years. Actually there is no fixed period as such. Here Able Qarn means a single generation.

  5. 5

The word ‘sama’ is used for rain because it descends only from the sky (sama).

  6. 6

Qartas can also be rightly written as Qirtas and Qurtas. It is a thing on which something is written. Three types of people are criticised in the beginning of this Surah :

    (1) Those who do not regard Allah as the creator of the heavens and the earth.

    (2) Those who think there are two different creators of light and darkness.

    (3) Those who regard other things as creators and do not realise Allah’s Might and Majesty.
