Madinan120 verses

5:90O you who have faith! Indeed wine, gambling, idols, and the divining arrows are abominations of Satan’s doing, so avoid them, so that you may be felicitous.1

5:91Indeed Satan seeks to cast enmity and hatred among you through wine and gambling, and to hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. Will you, then, relinquish?

5:92And obey Allah and obey the Apostle, and beware; but if you turn your backs, then know that Our Apostle’s duty is only to communicate in clear terms.

5:93There will be no sin upon those who have faith and do righteous deeds in regard to what they have eaten [in the past] so long as they are Godwary and faithful and do righteous deeds, and are further Godwary and faithful, and are further Godwary and virtuous. And Allah loves the virtuous.2123

5:94O you who have faith! Allah will surely test you with some of the game within the reach of your hands and spears, so that Allah may know those who fear Him in secret. So whoever transgresses after that, there is a painful punishment for him.

5:95O you who have faith! Do not kill any game when you are in pilgrim sanctity. Should any of you kill it intentionally, its atonement, the counterpart from cattle of what he has killed, as judged by two fair men among you, will be an offering brought to the Ka‘bah, or an atonement by feeding needy persons, or its equivalent in fasting, that he may taste the untoward consequences of his conduct. Allah has excused what is already past; but should anyone resume, Allah shall take vengeance on him, for Allah is all-mighty, avenger.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 90

1.Intoxication and gambling are forbidden in Islam and it has informed about the loss and benefits about them. Wine makes one incoherent and gambling destroys wealth. Intoxication and gambling are invitation to lawlessness, but it is surprising that Muslims do not pay attention towards these evils. One who avoids wine has become a gambler. This wickedness in Islam is that they are ready to give honored status to the famous gamblers as the keepers of Mecca and Medina. What more can one act in reviling Islam?

Verse 94

2.This hunting denotes hunt animals of dry land which is easy to hunt for humans and where access of hands and spear is possible. The law of this hunting is that it is unlawful in the limits of the sanctuary and in Ehraam and the punishment is that if its like is possible to get then the animal which two just persons say it is like it, it should be slaughtered near the Holy Ka’ba and its flesh should be distributed among the poor and if a like is not possible wheat equal to the price of the animal should be purchased should be distributed to the poor and 3/4 or 1.5 kg to each; and if it is also not possible, keep one fast for every 3/4, so that one may taste the unwholesome result of opposition to Ehraam and the insult to the limits of haram. We should know that according to Islamic law the limit of sanctuary of Ka ‘ba in the North is about 6 km away from Mecca and 12 km in south and 15 km in east.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Islam has put intoxication, games of chance and idolatry in the same class. All of them are labeled as sins and satanic deeds. Later mention is made of two additional disadvantages of wine and gambling. They create discord in the society and in the religious life man becomes forgetful of Allah’s remembrance as commonly seen in drunkards and gamblers. The wine-drinker becomes heedless in his intoxication and the gambler becomes so engrossed in his game that he becomes oblivious of religious duties. At least it creates hatred and enmity.

  2. 2

When the command prohibiting wine descended people raised the question about the wine drinkers who were already dead. What shall be their end? The reply was that it was subject to their piety. And piety is dependent on three things.

  3. 1

To abstain from other sins before the prohibition of wine.

  4. 2

To abstain from wine after it is prohibited.

  5. 3

After discontinuing drinking one should abstain from other sins so that one is included among the righteous.
