5:6O you who have faith! When you stand up for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe a part of your heads and your feet, up to the ankles. If you are junub, purify yourselves. But if you are sick, or on a journey, or any of you has come from the toilet, or you have touched women, and you cannot find water, then make tayammum with clean ground and wipe a part of your faces and your hands with it. Allah does not desire to put you to hardship, but He desires to purify you, and to complete His blessing upon you so that you may give thanks.123
5:7Remember Allah’s blessing upon you and His covenant with which He has bound you when you said, ‘We hear and obey.’ And be wary of Allah. Indeed Allah knows best what is in the breasts.
5:8O you who have faith! Be maintainers, as witnesses for the sake of Allah, of justice, and ill feeling for a people should never lead you to be unfair. Be fair; that is nearer to Godwariness, and be wary of Allah. Allah is indeed well aware of what you do.
5:9Allah has promised those who have faith and do righteous deeds forgiveness and a great reward.

Commentary on this passage
The method of ablution (Wuzu) is mentioned in this blessed verse in brief and the detailed instructions are available in traditions. The method of washing the face and hands, the place of wiping the head, and whether feet should be wiped or washed. The traditions expound the brief instructions of Quran as is their function but they should not be against the apparent meanings of Quran. If Quran orders wiping of feet and the traditions order washing them, then these kinds of traditions are not trustworthy; though they may be from any narrator.
Verse 6
1.After mention of the post coition bath both the conditions are brought together, where bath is obligatory as after coition or ablution is necessary as after passing urine or stool etc. and then there is mention of Tayammum which is common replacement for both and then its method is mentioned that no matter whether in place of bath or ablution it does not concern the whole body. Only face and some part of the hands and that also according to the details mentioned in the traditions.
Verse 8
2.The correct life of a Muslim is that each of his steps should be for the sake of Allah and whatever he says or does, it should be for Allah and there should not be worldly adulteration after that. Moreover he should have the spirit for Jehad but He should not become unjust due to enmity or revenge because it is against Taqwa; and Islam wants the Muslims to be Muttaqi (fearing Allah) obedient and it does not want them to cross the limits set by Allah.
Footnotes
Explanations of words and phrases in these verses
- 1
Ilaa - It is the boundary of the hand, it is not the limit fixed for washing it. That is why the word ‘Mi,,’ is not included therein.
- 2
Bey indicates that the top of head is to be rubbed. Masah of the complete bead is not necessary. Though Arjulakam has a zabr, its command is not related to ‘Wajbukum’ and ‘Aidikum’ because the order for Ghusl has already been stated. The topic of discussion now is Masah (rubbing). Such irrelevance is not present in the Divine words.
- 3
Here also ‘Bey’ indicates that the Masah of full face and hands is not necessary. If it had been so the ‘bey’ would have been inelevant. The command of Tayammum is having three hidden benefit
(i) The person is saved from the difficulty of performing Ghusl.
(ii) His purification can be arranged.
(iii) The bounties can be completed for him. This is indicated by the fact that Tayammum is a type of purification, a facility and a bounty. Now if a Muslim considers Tayammum lowly and he is not satisfied with it, it means that he is not the servant of Allah, he is the servant of his personal opinion, and he has undervalued facility, purification and bounty.
Benefit
The Alif of Awjaa Ahd Minkum is on Izan Qumtum. Otherwise the AW would have been a meaningless waw. Also the 7th ayat has a natural pledge with regard to the world and it is also a legislation from the point of view of Islam.
