Madinan38 verses
47:30If We wish, We will show them to you so that you recognize them by their mark. Yet you will recognize them by their tone of speech, and Allah knows your deeds.1
47:31We will surely test you until We ascertain those of you who wage jihad and those who are steadfast, and We shall appraise your record.
47:32Indeed those who are faithless and bar from the way of Allah and defy the Apostle after guidance has become clear to them, they will not hurt Allah in the least, and He shall make their works fail.
47:33O you who have faith! Obey Allah and obey the Apostle, and do not render your works void.*
47:34Indeed those who are faithless and bar from the way of Allah and then die faithless, Allah will never forgive them.
47:35So do not slacken and [do not] call for peace when you have the upper hand and Allah is with you, and He will not stint [the reward of] your works.*
47:36The life of the world is just play and diversion, but if you are faithful and Godwary, He will give you your rewards, and will not ask your wealth [in return] from you.*
47:37Should He ask it from you and press you, you will be stingy, and He will expose your spite.
47:38Ah! There you are, being invited to spend in the way of Allah; yet among you there are those who are stingy; and whoever is stingy is stingy only to himself. Allah is the All-sufficient, and you are all-needy, and if you turn away He will replace you with another people, and they will not be like you.2

Commentary on this passage
Verse 31
1.Patience and Jihad are two necessary and complimentary qualities. One who has no power of patience cannot be eligible for Jihad. One who has the power of patience can bear every kind of difficulty and he would not have any problem in Jihad. The Almighty intends to test the hypocrites by these very qualities. That how much patience they have and how eager they are for Jihad. The traditions have equated Patience to be half of Faith. Indeed the first stage of faith is patience and the next one is thankfulness which is an expression of the perfection of faith and the human character becomes complete.
Verse 35
2.The practical wisdom of Jihad in Islam indicates that when the enemy comes to confront you, you must not talk of any reconciliation because this would imply your weakness. Rather you must fight with such ferocity that he is compelled to talk of peace. After this you must decide whether reconciliation is for the good of Islam or not, whether it is beneficial or harmful and your further course of action should be guided by this. One who attacks Islam is not concerned with human values that peace should be worked out with him. If he were really concerned with peace and reconciliation he would not have attacked in the first place. Islam and Eimaan (faith) demands that Jihad should be continued and after this honour and success belongs to the believers.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses
- 1
Some commentators say that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) used to recognize the hypocrites easily after the revelation of this ayat while he was unable to do so before. Although there is no mention of it in the ayat. Rather apparently it is true that hypocrites are in any case identified by their actions. If Allah desired He could have appointed some identifiable signs on their faces. But it was against the dictates of hidden wisdom so He has made it apparent only in their words and did not make tbe signs of hypocrisy apparent on their faces.
Benefit
The 33rd ayat is an announcement that just as through infidelity there is danger for truth to be destroyed in the same way to disobey the commands of Allah and His Prophet (s.a.) makes the deed susceptible to destruction. The protection of deeds is also the duty of the believers. This is more difficult than the actual deed.
Benefit
It should be clear that in the 35th ayat there is mention of disrespectful peace treaty. While in place there is mention of respectful peace treaty. Therefore there is no contradiction. In the same way in the 36th ayat there is negation for asking for oneself and in the 38th ayat there is an invitation to practice charity which is going to benefit the person himself.

Fi sabilillaah is every good act. It is not confined to Jihad. One should note that the loss of miserliness is first suffered by the miser himself before it harms others. He lives like a beggar in this world and give accounts in the Hereafter like the wealthy. He leaves all his wealth and takes with him only sorrow.
