46. Al-Ahqaf · The Dunes

Makkan35 verses

46:23He said, ‘The knowledge [of when that threat will be carried out] is with Allah alone. I communicate to you what I have been sent with. But I see that you are a senseless lot.’1

46:24When they saw it as a cloud advancing toward their valleys, they said, ‘This cloud brings us rain.’ ‘No, it is what you sought to hasten: a hurricane carrying a painful punishment,

46:25destroying everything by its Lord’s command.’ So they became such that nothing could be seen except their dwellings. Thus do We requite the guilty lot.

46:26Certainly We had granted them power in respects that We have not granted you, and We had vested them with hearing and sight and hearts. But neither their hearing availed them in any way nor did their sight, nor their hearts when they used to impugn the signs of Allah. So they were besieged by what they used to deride.

46:27Certainly We have destroyed the towns that were around you, and We have variously paraphrased the signs so that they may come back.

46:28So why did not those [fake deities] help them whom they had taken as gods besides Allah, as a means of nearness [to Him]? Indeed, they forsook them; that was their lie and what they used to fabricate.2

46:29When We dispatched toward you a team of jinn listening to the Quran, when they were in its presence, they said, ‘Be silent!’ When it was finished, they went back to their people as warners.34

Commentary on this passage

Verse 24

1.Although the nation of the Aad were living in the desert they were rich both from the material as well as the spiritual aspect. The Creator of the Universe had bestowed them with power and also given them the bounties of sight, hearing and feelings. They did not pay any heed to the teachings of Hud (a.s.) and the limit was that even though their chief brought faith in Hud (a.s.) yet they refused to listen. Thus the Almighty sent the punishment of famine and this continued for a long time. When they still did not come to the right path the Almighty used a new method of chastisement. So that only the wrong doers were destroyed and the rest did not suffer any harm if they were present in their midst. The method was that a cloud was seen approaching. People came under it in expectation of rain. But instead of water it rained fire and all the people below it were reduced to ashes. Neither the comfort of the world was of any help to them nor their power. Rather the bounties of Allah became the proof (Hujjat), that in spite of having eyes and ears why did they not see and hear, and why they did not try to understand? It should be clear that such people are present in every age and they shall be present in every age who did not value the bounties of Allah and continued to disbelieve in the divine representatives. The fact is that the Islamic nation is safe from retribution due to the barakat of Rahmatallil Aalameen (Mercy for the worlds) otherwise this nation is in no way less deviated and disgraceful than the people of Aad.

Verse 29

2.The Jinns have been mentioned at many places in the Holy Quran and this proves that they are creatures of Allah whose conditions are very much similar to those of the human beings. The only way one could learn about them is through divine revelation because they are invisible to human eyes. A detailed description of the Jinns is given in the Surah Jinn. Shaitan himself is mentioned to be from the genre of Jinns. Whatever is mentioned on this point is a lesson for the people. That when the Jinns heard the Quran they brought faith in it and also began to call others towards it. They began to say Labbaik (Here we come) in response to the call of the caller of Allah. While the human beings in spite of their claim of being the Asharaful Makhlooqaat (the greatest among the creation) listens constantly to the ayat of Quran but there is no effect on his heart or mind. Jinns are much better than such people. It should be c!ear that the confirmation of the existence of Jinns does not prove the daily rumours that we hear about the activities of Jinns and the way they are exercised. The majority of these incidents are nothing but doubt and conjecture and that is the reason that they affect only the ignorant commoners and the Jinns only visit these people. The intellectuals and educated people are not affected by these things.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

The great people propagate religion in a way where they do not mention any merit of theirs but time and again speak about Allah so that people are attracted towards it. And even if one mind is attracted to it their labour is rewarded.

  2. 2

The infidels had resorted to deceit in every age. When they saw that the announcement of idol-worship is earning insults, they began to say that we do not consider them as gods, we consider them as means to reach God. Though the fact is that they are not even prepared to listen to Allah about them, which is the best sign of their devotion to them and which is the last stage of deviation of a nation. Benefit: The surrounding inhabitants denote the nations of other people which include the People of Samood which is to the north of the Arabian Peninsula, the nation of Saba in Yemen, the People of Shu’ayb on the route to Shaam at Madayan and the People of Lut were also living in that area. Benefit: The propagators of Jinns have stated Quran to be the basis of religion and mentioned its three qualities: In their statement: Yaghfirlakum Zunoobakum, ‘min’ is of relationship (Izaafa) and Allah is the forgiver of all sins provided it should not be in the rights of the people and it could be that ‘min’ of differentiation.
