43. Az-Zukhruf · Ornaments of gold

Makkan89 verses

43:36We assign a devil to be the companion of him who turns a blind eye to the remembrance of the All-beneficent.

43:37Indeed they bar them from the way [of Allah], while they suppose that they are [rightly] guided.

43:38When he comes to Us, he will say, ‘I wish there had been between me and you the distance between the east and the west! What an evil companion [you are]!’*

43:39‘Today that will be of no avail to you. As you did wrong, so will you share in the punishment.’*

43:40Can you, then, make the deaf hear or guide the blind and those who are in manifest error?1

43:41We will indeed take vengeance on them, whether We take you away

43:42or show you what We have promised them, for indeed We hold them in Our power.

43:43So hold fast to what has been revealed to you. Indeed, you are on a straight path.

43:44Indeed it is a reminder for you and your people, and soon you will be questioned.

43:45Ask those of Our apostles We have sent before you: Did We set up any gods to be worshipped besides the All-beneficent?*

43:46Certainly We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his elite. He said, ‘I am indeed an apostle of the Lord of all the worlds.’2

43:47But when he brought them Our signs, they indeed laughed at them.

43:48We did not show them a sign but it was greater than the other, and We visited on them punishment so that they might come back.

43:49They would say, ‘O magician! Invoke your Lord for us by the covenant He has made with you [to remove this scourge]. We will indeed be guided [when it is removed].’

Commentary on this passage

Verse 39

1.Some people thought that if their leaders and disciples gathered in hell, the punishment of disciples will be decreased because these poor people were misguided and they were not guilty. The Quran clarifies that it would not be so. They cannot benefit by decreasing the fire of hell because the associates also dig their own grave otherwise they would not listen to their leader and would not accept their insinuations when the religious leaders were present before their eyes to clarify the truth.

Verse 42

2.Some people taunted the Prophet (s.a.) that people are harassing you and Allah does not send chastisement on them. Allah replied immediately that you be satisfied completely We can send chastisement before your eyes and can send after you also. There is no scarcity in Our power and authority. Chastisement will arrive at any cost whether you remain alone or pass away from the world.

Verse 45

3.According to tradition, the Prophet (s.a.) asked his followers in the night of Ascension : What is the basis of your Annunciation? They said : Al1ah’s Oneness, your Apostleship and the guardianship of Ali [Ibne Abi Talib (a.s.)]. (Tafseer Nishapur year 329, Tehran) The source of this tradition is that to ask the Prophet (s.a.) to inquire from the previous prophets. This is the sign that all prophets gathered there at some place. Otherwise there was no question of gathering in general condition. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) arrived in our world after al1 the prophets.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

In the 38th ayat ‘Ba’dul Mashriqaen’ is an idiom that includes both the East and West and the 39th ayat is the sign that oppressors will not even get as much peace as the person in trouble get after seeing his companion in trouble.

  2. 1

Obviously they were not blind or deaf. Rather they had decided not to see the signs of truth or hear the discourse of truth and that is why their guidance was not possible. Like those in clear error denotes those who had willingly decided to remain in deviation. Otherwise the Prophet had come to guide only those who were in clear error.

  3. Benefit

In the 45th ayat there is a possibility that the addressed ones are really the deniers and the actual target are the past nations of past prophets because they also do not call themselves deniers of Tawheed.

  4. 2

The ayats mean those miracles that Allah had bestowed on Moosa (a.s.) to prove his prophethood. And Muzhik (ridicule) is that practice that is always resorted to by the opponents of the truth that when they could not reply to the clear arguments they resort to this method and that is why a joking person is severely criticised.
