42:3Allah, the All-mighty and the All-wise, thus reveals to you and to those who were before you:

42:4whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth belongs to Him, and He is the All-exalted, the All-supreme.1

42:5The heavens are about to be rent apart from above them, while the angels celebrate the praise of their Lord and plead for forgiveness for those [faithful] who are on the earth. Indeed, Allah is the All-forgiving, the All-merciful!2

42:6As for those who have taken awliya besides Him, Allah is watchful over them, and you are not their keeper.

42:7Thus have We revealed to you an Arabic Quran that you may warn [the people of] the Mother of the Towns and those around it, and warn [them] of the Day of Gathering, in which there is no doubt, [whereupon] a part [of mankind] will be in paradise and a part will be in the Blaze.3

42:8Had Allah wished, He would have surely made them one community; but He admits whomever He wishes into His mercy, and the wrongdoers do not have any guardian or helper.

42:9Have they taken awliya besides Him? [Say,] ‘It is Allah, who is the [true] Wali, and He revives the dead, and He has power over all things.

42:10Whatever thing you may differ about, its judgement is with Allah. That is Allah, my Lord. In Him, I have put my trust, and to Him do I turn penitently.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 6

1.Being no responsibility of the Prophet’s (s.a.) means that a man is left on his free will. He can follow any way he likes, otherwise it is sure that whatever way he chooses he has to be bound by His commands. At that time the prophet would be responsible to make him follow the rules of Islam and not free him from this restriction. The similarity between “La lkraha Fiddine” and the boundaries of religious law are the same, that the opponent should be free to use his senses to decide which way is good for him and believers be compelled to follow the religious rules and they cannot cross the boundaries. The opponents are not entirely free. They are given freedom to a limit, so that he can make his senses follow his desire and ruin himself, then it is the duty of every sympathetic person to restrain his freedom and save him from destruction.

Verse 8

2.No doubt, Allah can guide by force but a man cannot be a man and he can be included in minerals and botany because the humanity of human and his intentions are dependent with each other. There is no humanity without it. The demand of his safeguard is that he should not be forced to accept the truth; he should accept it willingly and follow its demands.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

According to some commentators these letters denote Rahman, Majeed, Aleem, Quddoos and Qabir. And one letter of each quality is taken to indicate that particular quality.

  2. 1

These skies are layers of planets that if they hear the remembrance of something other than Allah they will crash in awe. It is only man who speaks such serious thing and is not affected.

  3. 2

This informs of the secret of the Isteghfar of the Pure Imams and the Prophets (a.s.). That if the angels are so much concerned for the people that they continue to seek forgiveness for them then the people of the earth who are in their nation should indeed pray for their forgiveness too.

  4. 3

It is an indication towards the beginning of revelation that the mission shall start from Mecca and its surrounding area. After this however, the message has to become universal. It is not limited only to Mecca and Medina. Though there is a principle for starting a particular work. That it should begin at home and slowly it should be continued so that favourable conditions are created and people may continue to benefit from the experience. Another thing is that Ummul Qura (mother of cities) is a title of Mecca because according to traditions this part of the world was first to emerge from water at the beginning of creation. Thus after this the whole world is meant by Ummul Qura and not Mecca and its surroundings.
