4:102When you are among them, leading them in prayers, let a group of them stand with you, carrying their weapons. And when they have done the prostrations, let them withdraw to the rear, then let the other group which has not prayed come and pray with you, taking their precautions and [bearing] their weapons. The faithless are eager that you should be oblivious of your weapons and your baggage, so that they could assault you all at once. But there is no sin upon you, if you are troubled by rain or are sick, to set aside your weapons; but take your precautions. Indeed Allah has prepared for the faithless a humiliating punishment.1
4:103When you have finished the prayers, remember Allah, standing, sitting, and lying down, and when you feel secure, perform the [complete] prayers, for the prayer is indeed a timed prescription for the faithful.2
4:104Do not slacken in the pursuit of these people. If you are suffering, they are also suffering like you, but you expect from Allah what they do not expect, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.
4:105Indeed We have sent down to you the Book with the truth, so that you may judge between the people by what Allah has shown you; do not be an advocate for the traitors,

Commentary on this passage
Verse 102
1.If you fear that the enemy will cause you harm, then divide the warriors into two divisions. One party will keep up prayer and another party will take their arms. When one rak’ah of prayer is complete, let another party came forward to join in second rak’ah. In this way both party will gain reward and unbelievers will not get a chance to attack you. Before war, there was an ordinary conflict between Muslims and the hypocrites. Khalid Bin Walid advised them for attack when they are in prayer but Allah foiled their plan and at one stroke prevented them in performing their prayer. At the time of noon-prayer in Kerbala the enemies attacked, when they were in prayer. This incident was the completion of Khalid Bin Walid’s desire. This was the open proclamation that army of Yazeed had no concern with Islam. This was the age of ignorance in Arabian peninsula.
Verse 104
2.The big divide of Islam and hypocrisy is that Muslims keep faith in Allah and expect reward from Allah alone and infidels are deprived from this faith. And for this reason they are unfortunate and they bear troubles, pain and suffering and nothing more. Therefore Muslims should keep in view that according to this philosophy a person should fight in the way of Allah as all, whether he is a believer or a disbeliever, suffer. but Muslim obtains the reward. Despite this belief, if Muslims does not create the courage for war then it is their misfortune. Today, the faithful suffer from this malady.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses
- 1
It shows that even if the Muslim is spared offensive war he cannot be condoned from defence duties. He should be always in a state of preparedness and must never be careless of it.
- 2
The remembrance of Allah after the Prayers is a custom of life for the Muslims that Allah is not remembered only in prayers. We should remember Allah even after prayers whether we are sitting, walking or sleeping. 3. Prayer is a compulsory duty and it has a fixed time. Thus we must offer prayer on time. To delay prayer is to be lazy in Prayer itself. That is why the scholars have mentioned that it is haraam to delay prayer without an excuse. We must also see the details of the excuses that are considered valid in condoning the delay. Personal views are not va1id excuses. If one is certain that remaining awake late at night will cause the morning prayer to become Qaza it is necessary for him to go to sleep and it is haraam to remain awake. For this even the excuse of a good deed does not suffice.
