39:32So who is a greater wrongdoer than him who attributes a falsehood to Allah, and denies the truth when it reaches him? Is not the [final] abode of the faithless in hell?1

39:33He who brings the truth and he who confirms it—it is they who are the Godwary.

39:34They will have what they wish with their Lord—that is the reward of the virtuous—

39:35that Allah may absolve them of the worst of what they did, and pay them their reward by the best of what they used to do.

39:36Does not Allah suffice [to defend] His servant? They would frighten you of others than Him. Yet whomever Allah leads astray, has no guide,23

39:37and whomever Allah guides, there is no one who can lead him astray. Is not Allah an all-mighty avenger?

39:38If you ask them, ‘Who created the heavens and the earth?’ they will surely say, ‘Allah.’ Say, ‘Have you considered what you invoke besides Allah? Should Allah desire some distress for me, can they remove the distress visited by Him? Or should He desire some mercy for me, can they withhold His mercy?’ Say, ‘Allah is sufficient for me. In Him let all the trusting put their trust.’

39:39Say, ‘O my people! Act according to your ability. I too am acting. Soon you will know

39:40who will be overtaken by a punishment that will disgrace him, and on whom a lasting punishment will descend.’

Commentary on this passage

Verse 32

1.The evidence of truth is the Holy Quran and also the personality of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.). because the statements of both are based on truth and there is no doubt of any minor error in anyone’s statements. But the next Ayat has been pointed out towards this point that sincerity means the Holy Quran and to bring sincerity means the personality of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) who is the supporter of the truth and dignity of his call is the highest existence that infidels and Polytheists also conceded his sincerity and truth; and after that one who verify, means Ali’s (a.s.) high position and his position is prominent and obvious existence above all. Such as, from the beginning till the last moment of life it becomes manifest and Allah has verified the truth of Apostleship, whether against the refusal of Apostleship of infidels or Polytheists or the refusal of the Christians, such as it is clarified from the Ayat of Mubahela that chastity of the members of the Holy Prophet’s family is the specimen of sincerity and truth, who have strength to curse the liars and their curse can destroy the whole world according to the confession of the enemies. It is another thing that this strength is not utilized during preaching.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

To get the truth and to testify for it could be the work of two different people. And there is chance that it could refer to the practical and verbal action of one and the same person. Also, Lahumma Yashaoona definitely does not mean that they will desire status higher than what they have because it is absolutely against the dignity of the inmates of Paradise.

  2. 1

Although falsehood is of thousands of types the greatest falsehood is that man should utter falsehood against Allah and to associate something baseless against Him. And greater falsehood is that to say something false then add: Allah knows better, that it is true.

  3. 2

It has always been a custom in infidels and disbelievers that they had always threatened the religious people with the powers that were useless. The infidels of Mecca also threatened the Holy Prophel (s.a.w.s.) that those idols could cause serious harm to him. The ayat has replied to this idiotic view that what these idols were capable of that they could harm someone. They themselves had no power over their profit and loss.

  4. 3

This deviation is also like other instances which denote leaving in misguidance. Otherwise Allah does not misguides anyone. In other words it could be said that the legal part of guidance is absent for everyone and its apparent and wordly aspect is with some bounties, conditional. Just as such kind of absence of guidance with some evil people is conditional.
