34:1All praise belongs to Allah to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. To Him belongs all praise in the Hereafter, and He is the All-wise, the All-aware.1

34:2He knows whatever enters into the earth and whatever emerges from it, and whatever descends from the sky and whatever ascends into it, and He is the All-merciful, the All-forgiving.2

34:3The faithless say, ‘The Hour will not overtake us.’ Say, ‘Yes, indeed it will surely overtake you, by my Lord,’ the Knower of the Unseen; not [even] an atom’s weight escapes Him in the heavens or in the earth, nor [is there] anything smaller than that nor bigger, but it is in a manifest Book,

34:4that He may reward those who have faith and do righteous deeds.’ For such there will be forgiveness and a noble provision.*

34:5But those who contend with Our signs seeking to frustrate [their purpose], for such is a painful punishment due to defilement.*

34:7The faithless say, ‘Shall we show you a man who will inform you [that] when you have been totally rent to pieces you will indeed have a new creation?

Commentary on this passage

Verse 7

1.To make fun of truth has become customary and has become a fashion today. Infidels and polytheists were joking instead of arguing regarding belief in the Hereafter and to answer the arguments of Islam that if this faith does become customary in the hearts of people, their reputation would come to an end and people would be disgusted from their leadership and convert to Islam. It is pointed out at this place that the method of poking fun at the concept of hereafter was by mocking the Prophet (s.a.) and telling people in the style of feigned ignorance that we came to know about such man, who infonns that after the death and scattereing into dust you shall be raised again. God knows he is mad or he forges a lie against Allah. Then, are you ready to bring faith on him?

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

Five Surahs of Quran begin with the praise of Allah. In three of them reference is made to the creation of the Universe, in one is mentioned the revelation of Quran and Surah Hamd speaks of Allah’s Lordship. The last of them is much broad, encouraging and having a deep meaning. That is why Surah Hamd is called the Summary of Quran.

  2. 1

This shows that every action of Allah from the world to the Hereafter is deserving of Praise.

  3. 2

There are different types of creatures. Some of them are below the earth like the seed etc. And some of them emerge from the earth like the tree etc. Allah is aware of both of them. He knows what is to be created from which seed. The same is the case of the heavens. Some things descend from it like rain and some ascend to it, like vapour and Allah is aware of even the most subtle things.

  4. Benefit

In the 4th ayat forgiveness is mentioned before sustenance because without forgiveness there is no possibility of sustenance from the Merciful Lord. Then in the 5th ayat ‘Min Rijzin Aleem’ has occurred with ‘min’ which indicates that the reward is all the sustenance of the Merciful and the punishment is a part of a painful chastisement which also indicates the unbounded mercy of Allah.
