33:55There is no sin on them [in socializing freely] with their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their brothers’ sons, or the sons of their sisters, or their own womenfolk, or what their right hands own. Be wary of Allah. Indeed Allah is witness to all things.1
33:56Indeed Allah and His angels bless the Prophet; O you who have faith! Invoke blessings on him and invoke Peace upon him in a worthy manner.
33:57Indeed those who offend Allah and His Apostle are cursed by Allah in the world and the Hereafter, and He has prepared a humiliating punishment for them.2
33:58Those who offend faithful men and women undeservedly, certainly bear the guilt of slander and flagrant sin.
33:59O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the faithful to draw closely over themselves their chadors [when going out]. That makes it likely for them to be recognized and not be troubled, and Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.
33:60If the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is a sickness, and the rumourmongers in the city do not desist, We will prompt you [to take action] against them; then they will not be your neighbours in it except briefly.
33:61Accursed, they will be seized wherever they are confronted and slain violently:
33:62Allah’s precedent with those who passed away before, and you will never find any change in Allah’s precedent.

Commentary on this passage
Verse 56
1.Salawat is the blessing from Allah, praise and purification from Angels and supplication of blessings from the believers. The Lord of universe has commanded to send Salawat on his Prophet (s.a.), now it is the duty of the Prophet (s.a.) to instruct people how to send Salawat as mentioned in Sahih Bukhari he taught the correct method that included the Progeny and commentators have also agreed of this Hadith which clearly means that when Muslims only mention Sallallaaho alaihe wa sallam and exclude the Progeny it is a bad innovation in religion and is not concerned with the Prophet (s.a.).
Verse 59
2.Some people think Jalyab is a kind of coverlet that covers from top to bottom and some think this is only a scarf that covers the head. Anyhow it should cover the whole body so that the hypocrites can estimate the sincerity of woman and do not confuse them. As veil is the best sign of good manners. In the beginning the women were not wearing a veil, so people were making fun of them and called them slave girls. The verse ordered them to observe hijab and stopped this practice.
Footnotes
Explanations of words and phrases in these verses
Benefit
The 53rd ayat indicates that when one speaks to the wives of the Prophet (s.a.), he should do it from behind a curtain although this is not obligatory in other cases. Hijab is a veil and the covering of a woman is called ‘satr’ in Islam, and not Hijab. The word Hijab has created a lot of misunderstanding in the society.
- 1
Hijab is necessary as much as possible even with the non-believer women because they might describe the beauty of the Muslim women to their men and this way create mischief.
Benefit: The 55th ayat has not specially mentioned paternal uncle and maternal uncle because the brother’s son/daughter and sister’s son/daughter is mentioned and it is sufficient. And the prohibitions are from both the sides. In the same way there is no mention of the husband’s son and father because they were not present at the time of the revelation of the ayat.

La’nat (curse) means to keep away from mercy. It has no relation of abusing or scolding. One who invokes a La‘nat only desires that the accursed person be kept away from divine mercy due to his evil deeds. As Amirul Momineen (a.s,) had said that Allah curses those who do not act upon it. Amirul Momineen (a.s.) says that the worst person is one who on the basis of suspicion does not trust the people and the people do not trust him due to his bad deeds.
