33:16Say, ‘Flight will not avail you, if you flee from death, or from being killed, and then you will be let to enjoy only for a little while.’
33:17Say, ‘Who is it that can protect you from Allah if He desires to cause you harm or desires to grant you His mercy?’ Besides Allah they will not find for themselves any protector or helper.
33:18Allah knows those of you who discourage others, and those who say to their brethren, ‘Come to us!’ and take little part in the battle,1
33:19grudging you [their help]. So when there is panic, you see them looking at you, with their eyes rolling like someone fainting at death. Then, when the panic is over, they scald you with [their] sharp tongues in their greed for the spoils. They never have had faith. So Allah has made their works fail, and that is easy for Allah.23
33:20They suppose the confederates have not left yet, and were the confederates to come [again], they would wish they were in the desert with the Bedouins asking about your news, and if they were with you they would fight but a little.4
33:21There is certainly a good exemplar for you in the Apostle of Allah—for those who look forward to Allah and the Last Day, and remember Allah much.5
33:22But when the faithful saw the confederates, they said, ‘This is what Allah and His Apostle had promised us, and Allah and His Apostle were true.’ And it only increased them in faith and submission.

Commentary on this passage
Verse 16
1.Here three kinds of deeds of hypocrites are mentioned which are permanent human traits and such people are found in every era. (i) People who consider running away as the means of saving their life thinking they will be safe if they quit the battlefield but there is no such possibility. Amirul Momineen (a.s.) has stated that thousands of wounds of swords are easier to bear than death on the bed. (ii) People who are cowards make other people spineless and Umar has displayed the same manner at the time of Battle of Khandaq, who started praising Amr Bin Abde Wudd and lowered the courage of Muslims. It is clear that this style continues even today and instead of increasing their courage, praise their reinforcement and lower their fearlessness. (iii) Those sweet tongued people who disappear when they are needed and then come back and deliver such speeches as if all this has been achieved by them alone. When it is the time for real fighting, an unconsciousness like death fans on them and when it is time for distributing the booty, they will be seeking the largest share.

Benefit
Here, five qualities are mentioned of those who prevented from Jihad: (1) They do not go for Jihad except a minority of them. (2) They do not sacrifice their life and wealth. (3) They lose their senses in times of fear. (4) In times of success they want all the credit. (5) Their lack of faith results in very less good deeds from them. Benefit: This word in 21st ayat is used in the meaning of the infinitive. But with regard to the imitation of the Prophet’s (s.a.) way of life it is used as a derivative. Belief in Allah and the Hereafter and the remembrance of Allah is absolutely necessary. Otherwise without it the character will not be exemplary and neither would anyone imitate it.
