32:1Alif, Lam, Meem.

32:2The [gradual] sending down of the Book, there is no doubt in it, is from the Lord of all the worlds.

32:3But they say, ‘He has fabricated it.’ No, it is the truth from your Lord, that you may warn a people to whom there did not come any warner before you, so that they may be guided [to the right path].1

32:4It is Allah who created the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them in six days, then He settled on the Throne. You do not have besides Him any guardian or intercessor. Will you not then take admonition?2

32:5He directs the command from the heaven to the earth; then it ascends toward Him in a day whose span is a thousand years by your reckoning.

32:6That is the Knower of the sensible and the Unseen, the All-mighty, the All-merciful,

32:7who perfected everything that He created and commenced man’s creation from clay.3

32:8Then He made his progeny from an extract of a base fluid.

32:9Then He proportioned him and breathed into him of His Spirit, and made for you hearing, sight, and hearts. Little do you thank.

32:10They say, ‘When we have been lost in the dust, shall we be indeed created anew?’ Indeed, they disbelieve in the encounter with their Lord.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 2

1.With the mention of the revelation of the Holy Quran and giving the reference of Allah as a proof that revelation of the Holy Quran has been under the care of Allah and its intention is to train the mental faculty and it is divine inspiration for bringing up the mental faculty and it is for the practical training of mankind. To consider the Quran as mere writing and compilation and to separate its arrangement from the training of people can create many problems and to be attentive towards it is to solve all posers. As only that is stated which is necessary for a particular time for training and the style of writing and compilation are not taken into consideration. Its comparison to other books is not lawful nor is it possible to find the style and expression of other books in this.

Verse 9

2.It is the spirit of life which has bestowed on the growth of a lowly and degraded drop a dress of superiority. Otherwise if separation is effected from the divine spirit, a man is nothing more than an impure drop. If only man had valued this grace and had continued this relationship.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

Some irreligious people have misinterpreted various terms of the 5th ayat. According to them the word Amr denotes religion and faitho and Tadbeer means the starting of a new faith. And ‘Urooj’ denotes abrogation of religion. They meant to say that Islam had a tenure of a thousand years after which it will be abrogated and a new religion shall be needed. These foolish people do not know that neither the word ‘Amr’ is used for religion in the Quran nor ‘tadbeer’ is used for ‘invention’, nor ‘Urooj’ for abrogation. This type of interpretation is only a mischief, that’s all.

  2. 1

It implies the time when divine revelation was stopped and religious guidance was carried out through the legatees (awsiya). To bring a Book in such circumstances was nothing less than a favour on humanity. Sensible people should welcome such a person and not that they should reject him and spoil their Hereafter.

  3. 2

It indicates the time of initial creation. The day of a thousand years also indicates a long time period. The day of Qiyamat is indeed the day of Qiyamat, and every comparison is apt for it.

  4. 3

Please note that this word is a past tense and not an infinitive. It means that whatever thing is created, is created in a beautiful form/shape etc.

Benefit: The 7th ayat proves that man is a completely created being. He is not a product of evolution and neither is there proof for evolution. Although this theory is not against Tawheed. Allah is the Creator whether He created them anew or He allowed them to evolve from His previous creation.
